Karma Yoga Village Visit to

Ammanampakkam

We visited Ammanampakkam as part of the Karma yoga activity on 22 nd Jan 2023. This report is to
summarize our learnings from this village visit.

1) Please describe the plan of action for the 22nd Jan 2023 field visit. (Date and time, Objectives,
Goals, Purpose of your visit)

As part of the Karma yoga activity, we visited Ammanampakkam village on 22 nd Jan 2023 in a group of 17
people. We left the campus at 9 am by minibuses. It was a pleasant drive of 20 minutes approximately.
On our arrival, we met with our point of contact Mrs. Dhansu. She took us on the village tour. Our
objective was to visit the village and study the lifestyle of the villagers. Talk to them and understand
their daily lives, what they do for a living and the primary income sources for most of the villagers. We
had to collect basic information about the village, like the water source, schools and other government
setups. These were our basic objectives for the village visit.

2) Please describe the activities done to complete the action plan. (Work done in the field).

We arrived at the village around 9:30 am and met with the POC Mrs. Dhansu. She took us on the village
tour. We visited the school and talked to the students of the school. On a Sunday morning, they were
playing in the field. We talked to them, played ‘Gilli-danda’ and had fun with them. We talked to some
elder people to know how the village has changed over the years and how the current situation is
better. Then we went on to see the water source of the village by doing a short 5-minute trekking. After
that, we went to the temple of the village and offered our pranams to the lord. We talked to a few
women and children over there and returned to our college around 12:30 pm.

3. What did you observe on 22nd Jan' and would like to implement in your next field visit? (Next level
of action)
We understood that the primary source of income for the villagers is farming. They grow paddy mostly
during this period of the year when water is available. During the year when water is less, they shift to
peanuts farming. There is a huge beautiful lake which is the primary source of water for farming and
drinking. We saw a few small shops there for food and grocery. We also observed govt. setups like
schools, weather offices for ease of farming, a post office and an SBI kiosk with basic banking facilities.

Since the primary source of income is farming so we would like to identify how the trade can be done
easily. We would like to understand how can we involve more people in this to create a sustainable
business model.

4. What is the learning outcome from this field visit? (Lessons learned.)

Villages are a great source to witness how people can live happily in the lap of mother nature, and how
they smile while being in all kinds of trouble. The villagers of Ammanampakkam are no different. This
village has very limited connectivity with the main road. The number of buses is very limited. When we
visited the village, we learnt how their daily lives revolve around farming. State and Central government
initiatives have touched upon the lives of these people. We have seen how these initiatives are actually
making people’s lives better. We also learnt how they have planned their farming as per the availability
of water. I would like to visit the village again to learn more about village life and work on the
improvement of their lives.
