List of Projects: Day 1: (10 December 2018)

The document summarizes a 9 day project conducted by students in the village of Dhundre. On the first few days, the students were briefed on the project and surveyed the village to understand the main problems of illiteracy, water shortage, and lack of medical facilities. They then planned activities like a drawing competition, tree plantation, and health camp. The students experienced challenges like lack of interest from villagers and time management issues. They overcame these by gaining villagers' trust, conducting awareness programs, and dividing tasks into groups. The document suggests ongoing support is still needed in the village, particularly for water access, skills training, education beyond 5th standard, and women's empowerment.

List of projects

Day 1: (10 December 2018)

On the First day we were briefed about the whole Project. The overall information was given to
us about the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and the Dhundre village by the faculty.

We were also provided with the Forms for the survey of the village. The form contained the
details about their income, lifestyle so that with help of those points we would be able to
understand the problems of the villagers better.

1
Day 2: (12 December 2018)

On day 2 we prepared our plan of action as we had to visit the village .So after discussing, we
decided that we would start with the survey. The survey would help us to understand the
problems of the people over there. We also discussed as how to approach the people over there,
so that they will be comfortable communicating with us and also confiding their personal details.

2
Day 3: (14 December 2018)

On day 3 we actually visited the village for the very first time. It was a very enriching
experience. The villagers were very friendly with us and shared their problems with us. The main
problems which we noticed through the survey were illiteracy and shortage of water supply. In
the village they don’t have municipal corporation pipelines, they have to buy the water on a daily
basis. The one more problem we noticed was of medical help, there were no doctors in the
village, if they need a doctor they had to go to Panvel.

3
Day 4: (17 December 2018)

Through the survey we came to know the problems the villagers had to face. So all the group
members had a meeting about what all activities we could conduct in the village so that those
will be useful for the villagers’ also. So after the discussion we came up with the activities like
drawing competition, tree plantation drive & health camp etc. We decided to organize a drawing
competition for the students of the school in the Village.

4
Day 5: (20 December 2018)

After the discussion of the activities to be conducted, we went to buy the supplies needed, such
as crayons for the drawing competition, sheets along with the prizes to be given to the students.
We were going to reward the winners, so the stationary and the gifts purchasing was done.

5
Day 6: (21 December 2018)

On the day 6 we had a talk with the women of the village. They shared with us their problems.
They told us about the water shortage and the other problems they faced. We also had a talk
about the hygiene and the cleanliness with them.

6
Day 7: (24 December 2018)

After visiting the village we had a meeting wherein we discussed about the planning of the
activities that were to be conducted such as health camp and drawing competition. We discussed
as how we will conduct these activities.

7
Day 8: (26 December 2018)

On this day we visited the School. It was a very nice experience. Here we had a talk with the
students, the students were very enthusiastic. The school was up to 5 th standard only. We
conducted a drawing competition in the school and also awarded the winners with prizes. We
also tried to educate students with some educational videos.

8
Day 9: (27 December 2018)

As we had discussed to conduct the health camp in the village, we started preparing for it. We
even printed the pamphlets for the villagers for awaring them about the health camp. We were
nearly done with the preparations but due to some problems & internal issues within the village
we were unable to conduct the health camp.

But we would be carry forwarding this activity to be done by the PGDM batch under Yuva For
Seva.

Challenges Faced by students working at NGO

 Lack of Interest shown by Villagers - People were hesitant to talk with students and share
their information.

 Criticism by few Local people- According to few Villagers these surveys were of no use
to them as such surveys were conducted in past which did not benefit them, hence they
were least interested to share information.

 Issues with Time Management - The Villages were very far hence time was a constraint
and to manage it was a big challenge. To complete certain tasks within the allocated time
was very important.

 Allotment of Trivial work- Allotting Survey work in Groups and to ensure that all the
houses in village are covered and no house is repeated was a great task,as it was new
place it was difficult to remember the routes.

 Issues with Self Management- As it was rural area we had to carry our own food and
water. Hygiene issues were also a problem.

 Unwillingness to Cooperate by Villagers- As we were Strangers to them some of the

Villagers had trust issues with Students. Some of them did not show any interest and did
not reply to any of questions treating us like salesperson.

10
 Lack of Support from Gram Panchayat.

 Villagers were Hesitant to reply to certain questions like their Income, Agricultural land.

How challenges were overcome

 It was important to gain trust of Villagers so we spoke to them in local language and then
they were comfortable to share the information for Survey.

 When they were told about the survey they were hesitant to reply but when they were
assured that because of this their Problems related to water would be solved they started
showing their Interest

 As Time management was a big issue we divided task in Groups so as to ease the work
and after the task was completed we used to discuss with whole team.

 Some villagers were so helpful that they helped us with communicating other people who
we not ready to share the information, this was because of their trust they showed on us.

 We also conducted Awareness programs for the students in their school regarding Waste
management, save water etc which helped us to communicate more with the teachers and
students of the school.

 These students would then share the information with parents and would create
awareness amongst more villagers.

Suggestions and Limitations

1. Awareness:
It is necessary for villagers to be made aware of what they are eligible for. As we were
moving around in Dhundre & by speaking to villagers we understood that they were
totally dependent on their Sarpanch and Upsarpanch for everything. As per the villagers
they were satisfied with whatever facilities they have but water which was the basic
necessity was not provided to them in fact they had to travel 15-20mins for well’s. One
of them said us that even if they have washrooms inside their house what they should do
of it if they don’t have water.

2. Inequality:
Even we noticed there was greater gap between the rich & the poor. The rich class had
the bore well facility within their compound & according to villagers they sold the water
to the rest at a price. This must be stopped instead of carrying out other activities it is
better to implant bore wells which can be accessed by the poor class. This will not only
provide the water facility to the villager but also the village will become independent.

3. Training and Development: Other problem which we noticed was unemployment

or the jobs which the people at Dhundre worked were as a painter. Painting is an art & if
nurtured & provided proper way can create good amount of income to the villagers.
Villagers who worked in this had to travel all the way to Panvel & even wage rate was
much less in comparison to the other artisans who work in cities. Proper guidance &

12
training if provided to them will help villagers to earn good & settle themselves in a
better way.

4. Most of the girls in this village were just 18-19 & were already married. If women’s of
the village are taught some skill full work like stitching or anything which they can do
sitting at home, will not only make them independent but also they will be able to divide
their responsibilities with their husbands & other earning member of the family.

5. School Facilities and Transportation : Visiting the school was one of the best
experiences we had. The students & teachers were so enthusiastic to learn new things &
we even took drawing competition there. But the school was till 5th standard only
because of which the students had to go to another school which is in other village for
further education & this may be one of the reason because of which family of the girls
were not interested to send them to school further & preferred to make their girl child sit
at home & get them married once they are 18. It would have be the best way to develop
the village if the school increases its capacity & brings in higher section under itself, so
that the students won’t need to travel to some other village after 5th standard.
