The power tong adopts the planetary claw clamping mechanism, which consists of open mouth gear,
open mouth gear cover, planetary claw, external curved die, planetary gear, middle gear, splined shaft etc. The
planetary gears on the top of splined shaft match the middle gear, the middle gear match the gears inner the
Braking nave. When tong head assembly starts to move, the Braking nave keep still temporarily. The middle
gears make revolution and self rotation round the gears of the Braking nave, in this way the planetary claws are
driven to move, the external curved die touches the tubing, the tong head assembly keeps moving, the Braking
nave rotates with the tubing to finish the make-up or break-out operation. After the operation, operate the hand
control combination valve to make the tong head assembly reversal to resume the position and face the notch.
The pin on the top of one axle, knob axle and knob make up the direction control mechanism. Turn the
knob to change the notch position of knob axle to control the rotation direction of the planetary claws and realize
the control of the tong head rotation direction.

Backup tong adopts the planetary clamping mechanism, which consists of backup tong body, backup
tong cover, planetary claw, external curved die, splined shaft sleeve, axle, planetary gear, gear ring, etc. When
the tail driving mechanism drives the gear ring past a certain angle, the gear ring drives each planetary gear to
rotate, thus each planetary claw rotates, the external curved die clamps the tubing to guarantee the
make-up/break-out operation of master tong. After the operation, backup tong tail driving mechanism make the
gear ring reverse rotation, each planetary claw is driven to reverse rotation to loose tubing.
The retaining pin at the gear ring, the knob axle at the backup tong cover, small gear and direction control
handle make up the direction control mechanism. The notch direction can be changed by turning the control
handle to control the gear ring direction and realize the control of backup tong head direction.
3.3 Front guide pole assembly
The springs in front guide pole assembly are used to ensure the master tong move up or down with the
tubing in make-up/break-out operation.

tong.
3.5 Integrated hydraulic valve bank
There are two kinds of integrated hydraulic valve bank: duplex
hydraulic valve (See Fig 5) and triplex hydraulic valve (See Fig 6).
Oil outlet
The duplex valve is used for pipe trip by twin elevator which
has fixed tubing collar position, the triplex valve is used for pipe
1
trip by single elevator which doesn’t have fixed tubing collar 2
position. Fig. 5
The duplex valve consists of hand control overflow Oil outlet
combination valve 2 and backup tong control valve 1, the
former makes master tong and backup tong move at same time,
and has overflow function under overload, the latter can control
the backup tong move alone, the oil pressure for backup tong
move alone can be adjusted freely, (adjusted before delivery), 2 Oil inlet
guarantee the backup tong steady through the throttle buffer.
The triplex valve consists of hand control overflow 3
combination valve 2, backup tong control valve 1 and elevator 1
Fig. 6
valve 3. The former two valves possess the complete functions
of duplex valve, the elevator valve is used for controlling hydraulic spring suspending device, adjusting the
power tong suspension height to make the backup tong die face the tubing collar or tubing body.

… Adjusting the overflow pressure too high may damage the power tong.

) … The oil inlet and outlet positions of the duplex valve differ from triplex valve.
Never connect the oil inlet and outlet hoses in the wrong way.

3.6 Suspending device

The suspending device has two varieties: spring suspending device (See Fig 7),

hydraulic spring suspending device (See Fig 8).
