Lesson 1
Chords, Arcs, Central Angles,
and Inscribed Angles
MELC: Derives inductively the relations among chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed
angles. (M10GE-11c-1)
Objectives: 1. Define chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed angles.
2. Identify the chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed angles of a circle.
3. Solve the degree measures of minor arc, major arc and semicircle.

Let’s Explore and Discover

Unlocking
of Difficulties Mommy Nida is constructing a flower garden like the one shown
below. She decided to divide the garden into 8 equal parts.
• Circle is the set of
all points that are
of the same
distance from a
given point on a
plane.

• Intercepted Arc is
the arc that lies in
the interior of an
inscribed angle
and has endpoints
on the angle.

Questions:
a. What is the degree measure of each arc along the circumference of the garden?
_____________________________________________________________________________
How about each angle formed by the plants’ divisions along the flowers?
_____________________________________________________________________________
b. If you were to construct circular garden, how many divisions would you use to
divide the garden? Why?
______________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________

How do the relationships among chords, arcs, and central angles of a circle facilitate
finding solutions to real-life problems and making decisions?

To answer these questions, you should read and understand this topic. Are you ready?
Let us begin.

Chord is a straight line segment whose endpoints both lie on the circle. It is named by
using its two endpoints. In figure 1, XY and ST are the chords of the circle Z. The
points that lie on the circle are: points X,S,U,R,Y,W,T.
Arc is a connected two endpoints of a circumference of a circle. It is named by using
its endpoints. The symbol of an arc is .

Types of Arcs

a. Semicircle – is an arc with a measure equal to one-half the circumference of a

circle. It is named by using its endpoints and another point on the arc. In figure
1, XUY is a semicircle. The other semicircles are XTY, XWY, XRY, and XSY.
b. Minor Arc – is an arc of the circle that measures less than a semicircle. It is
named usually by using the two endpoints of the arc. In figure 1, RY is an
example of a minor arc. Some of the other minor arcs are RU, RW, SR, XS, ST,
WT, WX, SW, WU, UT and SY.
c. Major Arc – is an arc of the circle that measures more than a semicircle. It is
named by using the two endpoints and another point on the arc. In figure 1,XYW
is an example of a major arc. Some of the other major arcs are RTU, RXW, SWR,
XYS, SRT, WST, WRX, SRW, WXU, UYT and STY.
Central Angle of a circle is an angle formed by two radii whose vertex is the center of a
circle. Each ray intersects the circle at a point dividing into arcs. In figure 1, ∠𝑾𝒁𝑼 is
a central angle with WU as its intercepted arc. Its sides divides circle Z into arcs. One
arc is the curve containing points W, Y, R and U. The other arc is the curve containing
points W, T, X, S and U. With the same figure, the other central angles and their
intercepted arcs are

∠XZW XW XSW, XUW, XRW, XYW XW
∠XZU XU XTU, XWU, XYU, XRU XU
∠YZU YU YWU, YTU, YXU, YSU, YU
These intercepted arc can be a minor arc or a major arc .

Sum of Central Angles

The sum of the measures of central angles of a circle with no common

interior points is 360°.
In figure 1, if m∠WZX =125°, m∠XZU = 90° , m∠YZU = 90° m∠YZW = 55°,
then m∠WZX + m∠XZU + m∠YZU + m∠YZW = 125° + 90° + 90° + 55° = 360°.

Note: All measures of angles and arcs are in degrees.

2
Inscribed Angle is an angle whose vertex lies on the circle and whose sides contain
chords of a circle. In figure 1, ∠RXY and ∠STU are inscribed angles with RY and SU
as their intercepted arcs ( it can be minor or major arcs) respectively.

Inscribed Intercepted What kind of Arc, major or minor? Why?

Angle Arc
RY is a minor arc, because its measure is less
∠RXY RY
than a semicircle.
SU is a minor arc, because its measure is less
∠STU SU
than a semicircle.

Degree Measure of Arcs

a. The degree measure of a minor arc is the measure of the central angle which
intercepts the arc.
Example: In figure 1, ∠WZU is a central. It intercepts circle Z at points W, Y,
R, and U. The measure of WU is equal to the measure of ∠WZU. So, if ∠WZU =
150°, then mWU = 150°.
b. The degree measure of a major arc is equal to 360 minus the measure of the
minor arc with the same endpoints.
Example: In figure 1, if mWU = 150°, then mWXU = 360° – mWU. That is,
mWXU = 360° – 150° = 210°. So, mWXU = 210°
c. The degree measure of a semicircle is 180°.

Example 1: Given circle G. Find mACI.

G
C S

40°
I
Figure 2.
Solution: 140°

mACI = mAC + mCI

= 115° + 140°
= 255°
Example 2: If m∠JRG = 135° and m∠GRM = 55°, find mJGM.
J

Figure 3.
Solution: M

mJGM= mJG + mGM

mJG = m∠JRG = 135°
mGM = m∠GRM = 55°
Therefore, mJGM = mJG + mGM = 135° + 55° = 190°
