THE EQUATION OF A CIRCLE
Circle is a common shape that you can see anywhere. But what is the importance of
this in solving related real-life problems?
The important skills that you will learn in this lesson are:
b. determining the center and radius of the circle from these forms of
equations.
1
Let’s check first
your prior
knowledge of the
lesson.
Direction: Read each item carefully then choose the letter of your answer
among the options. Write only the letter on your answer sheet.
2. Which of the following equations is the standard form of the circle in problem # 1?
A. (x - 2)2 + (y + 5)2 = 16 C. (x - 5)2 + (y - 2)2 = 42
2 2
B. (x - 2) + (y - 5) = 16 D. (x + 5)2 + (y + 2)2 = 42
A. x2 + y2 - 4x +16y -76 = 0
B. x2 + y2 + 4x -16y -76 = 0
C. x2 + y2 - 4x - 16y + 76 = 0
D. x2 + y2 + 4x -16y+ 76 = 0
2
In the previous lesson, you were able to find out how circles are
illustrated in real life. You were also given the opportunity to find the
radius of a circle and determine if a point is on the circle or not. But
what equation do you think would relate the radius and the center of
the circle? What are the different forms of equation of a circle?
You will find these out in the succeeding activities. Before doing
these activities, read and understand first some important notes on the
equation of a circle and the examples presented.
The standard equation of a circle with center at point (h,k) and a radius of r units and
known as "center-radius form" or "standard form" is (x - h)2 + (y - k) = r2.. The values of h
and k indicate that the circle is translated h units horizontally and k units vertically from the
origin.
Example 1. Give the equation of the circle shown in the figure in standard form.
Solution:
The center is at (2,-1) and the radius = 3. Using the standard form
(x - h)2 + (y - k) = r2.
(x - 2)2 + [y - (-1)] 2 = 32 by substitution
2 2
(x - 2) + (y + 1) = 9. simplify
Answer: The standard form of the equation of the circle is (x-2)2+(y + 1)2 = 9.
Example 2. What is the equation of a circle with center at (3, 7) and a radius
of 6 units?
Solution:
The center is (3, 7) and the radius = 6, using the standard form
(x - h)2 + (y - k) = r2.
(x - 3)2 + (y - 7)2 = 62 by substitution
(x - 3)2 + (y -7)2 = 36. simplify
Answer: The standard form of the equation of the circle is (x - 3)2 + (y - 7)2 = 36.
3
Notice that the formula for the circle with the center at the origin is
just a special case of the formula for a circle at point (h, k).
Example 1.
Solution:
(x - h)2 + (y - k) = r2.
(x - 0)2 + (y - 0))2 = 32 by substitution
x 2 + y 2 = 9. simplify
Example 2. What is the equation of a circle with center at the origin and a
radius of 4 units?
Solution:
x 2 + y2 = r2.
x 2 + y 2 = 42 by substitution
x 2 + y2 = 16. simplify
4
Center Radius Standard Form
1. (-5, 3) 12
2. origin 5
Were you able to write the equation of the circle given its radius and its
center? Good job!
In the next activity, you will find the center and radius of a circle from the
standard form. Enjoy learning!
The center and the radius of a circle can be found given the equation to its standard
form (x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2 if the center of the circle is (h,k) or x2 + y2 = r2 if the center of the
circle is the origin.
Example 1. Find the center and radius of the circle having the equation:
x2 + y2 = 64
Solution:
The equation of the circle x2 + y2 = 64 has its center at the origin. Hence,
it can be transformed to the form x2 + y2 = r 2 .
x2 + y2 = 64
x2 + y2 = 82
Answer: The center of the circle is (0,0) and its radius is 8 units.
Example 2. Determine the center and the radius of the circle having the
equation: (x - 2)2 + (y - 4)2 = 25
Solution:
The equation of the circle (x - 2)2 + (y - 4)2 = 25 can be written in the form
(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2
(x - 2)2 + (y - 4)2 = 25 (- h = - 2 or h = 2) ; (- k = - 4 or k = 4)
(x - 2)2 + (y - 4)2 = 52
Answer: The center of the circle is (2, 4) and its radius is 5 units.
5
Standard form Center Radius
1. (x + 4)2 + (y + 9)2 = 25
2.
x2 + y2 = 36
How was the activity? Were you able to determine the center and radius of
the circle from the standard form?
In the next activity, you will transform the equation of a circle from standard
to general form. Please take note of the process.
(x - h)2 + (y - k) = r2.
(x – 2hx + h2 + (y2 - 2ky + k2) = r2.
2
Example 1. Write the general equation of a circle with center (0, 5) and a radius
of
6 units. Then determine the values of D, E, and F.
Solution:
6
(x - h)2 + (y - k) = r2. by substitution
(x - 0)2 + (y - 5)2 = 62. simplify
(x)2 + (y2 -10y + 25) = 36
x2 + y2 - 10y + 25 = 36
x2 + y2 - 10y + 25 – 36 = 0
x2 + y2 - 10y - 9 = 0
Answer: x2 + y2 - 10y - 9 = 0 is the general equation of the circle with center C (0,
5) and radius of 6 units. In the equation, D = 0, E = -10, and F = -9.
Example 2. Write the general equation of a circle with center (4, -1) and a radius
of 7 units. Then determine the values of D, E, and F.
Solution:
The center of the circle is at (h, k) where h = 4 and k = -1. Substitute these values
in the standard form of the equation of a circle together with the length of the
radius r which is equal to 7 units.
1. (x + 2)2 + (y + 3)2 = 25
2. (x + 2)2 + y 2 = 64
Were you able to write the equations in their general form? Did the
Mathematics concepts and principles that you previously learned help you in
transforming the equations?
In the next activity, you will do the reverse. This time you will transform the
equation of a circle from general to standard form, then determine the radius and
center of the circle. Go, go, go!
