CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH 1
ACTIVITY 3
I . RATIONALE
Curfew hours in Iligan City was first implemented on May 24, 2017to maintain stability
of peace and order in the area amidst ongoing cleaning operations of the government troops in
Marawi City. Due to an improving security outlook in the city, the local legislators have agreed
to shorten the curfew period for residents from eight hours to only five hours. (Philippine Daily
Inquirer, 2017)
The purpose of conducting this issue is that the residents of Barangay Suarez have
experienced it several times. Most of the residents have been so alert to their vehicles because of
this issue. also to prevent juvenile crime and to protect youth from victimization. The issue has
been noticed by the residents who raised concerns at the residence. The barangay of Suarez has
so-called CCTV in every corner and somewhere in accident-prone areas. As per the Barangay
Tanod being roving around, some say that there will be no more Barangay Tanod roving at night.
In the study, I would like to look into the safeness of the Barangay Suarez in which that
the Barangay Tanod will make move and the people to look forward for that the place were safe
in each designated Purok. This study wants more to be focus on how the residence might felt safe
by the hands of some barangay officials by implementing the curfew for everyone.
In our current generation, crimes and other law breaking activities are rampant to our
society. Nowadays, there are only few peaceful places around the Philippines that you could feel
safe. Batanes and Davao, they are said to be the most peaceful places in the Philippines. Batanes
is known for their zero crime rate from the past years. These is because people out there are just
living according to what to their will. They are not dependent with each other and they respect
each other, that’s make them peaceful. In the other hand, Davao is known as a peaceful city
because of the good governance held by their mayor, Rodrigo Roa Duterte which now the
current president of the Republic of the Philippines. Davao was not a peaceful place back then,
but because of the brilliance of their mayor they deserve the name.
Based on the aforementioned situation, the researchers led on the study entitled, "The
Impact of Implementing Curfew Due to Carnapping Case Purok Presidents In Baranggay Suarez,
Iligan City".
II . THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
The theories that will be used in this study are Social Control Theory of Travis Hirschi
(1969) and Psychological Reactance Theory of Jack Brehm (1966).
Travis Hirschi created the Social Control Theory, which was first known as the Social
Bond Theory in 1969. According to the Social Control Theory, delinquent conduct will manifest
itself when societal restraints on antisocial behavior are reduced or eliminated. In other words,
the risk that a person would engage in illegal action increases when they lack the social networks
that would typically deter them from doing so.
INDEPENDENT DEPENDENT
VARIABLE VARIABLE
Figure 1. A paradigm showing the variables of the study The independent variable is the
Impact of Implementing Curfew Due to Carnapping Cases while the dependent variable is the
Purok Presidents In Barangay Suarez, Iligan City. The dependent variable is essential in
assessing the independent variable. The independent and the dependent variables will be
correlated using the data gathered from the Purok Presidents of Suarez.
III. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The objective of this study is to determine the relationship between the impact of
implanting curfew due to carnapping case in Suarez. Specifically, it will answer the following
questions:
1. Are different criminal activities still prevalent in Suarez after the curfew implementation?
