Transactional Analysis

Transactional analysis (TA) is a theory of personality and psychotherapy developed by Eric Berne. It views personality as composed of three ego states - parent, adult, and child. The goal states are to have healthy parent, adult, and child ego states and engage in complementary transactions. Unhealthy transactions include contaminated transactions where one ego state mistakes content from another ego state as its own, crossed transactions requiring a shift in ego states, and ulterior transactions with covert psychological messages. TA is used for coaching, communication, change management, and leadership development.
