EEE211 Mid-Term Summer 2021

This document contains the marks sheet for an Electrical Circuit-II midterm exam taken by a student during the summer 2021 term. The exam consisted of two questions. Question 1 (35 marks) asked the student to calculate the power factor of an electrical machine load circuit, modify it to achieve unity power factor, and analyze the real, reactive and apparent power before and after the modification using phasor algebra and diagrams. Question 2 (25 marks) asked the student to design a simple passive R-C high-pass filter, find its -3dB frequency and voltage gain, illustrate its frequency response, and determine the type of filter if circuit components were changed. The document provides instructions for submitting exam responses and identifies the course code, title

Q1. (CO2)
Consider the equivalent circuit of an electrical machine load along with Marks
the electrical connecting path as shown in Fig.1 and answer following (35)
questions.

(a) Compute the power factor of the circuit. (5)

(b) Modify the circuit by adding a capacitor in parallel to the load to (10)
make the circuit of unity power factor.
(c) Compute the real power, reactive power and apparent power of (6+4)
the circuit before and after improvement. Also sketch the power
triangle in each case.
(d) Show that KVL holds true for the circuit using phasor algebra and (10)
phasor diagram.

Q2. (CO3)
Suppose you are hired as a Telecommunication Engineer at Company Marks
ABCD, where you are asked to design a simple passive R-C high-pass (25)
filter. The equivalent circuit of the filter is shown in Fig. 2.

(a) Find the -3dB frequency. Calculate the magnitude and phase (2+8)
angle of voltage gain, 𝐴𝑣 in dB at cut-off frequency.
(b) Illustrate the filter characteristics with frequency response
diagram in a Bode plot (magnitude only). Consider the frequency (8)
range of 1 kHz ~ 1 GHz with an increment of a factor of 10.
Identify the pass-band and stop-band region.

(c) Determine the type of filter. If the capacitor 530.52𝑝𝐹 is replaced (1+4+2)
with an inductor of 100𝑚𝐻 then determine the resultant filter
type and the resultant cut-off frequency? Interpret the results.
