ABSTRACT

The educational tour is part of the Anna University curriculum for architecture students. The
goal of this tour is to enable us to better comprehend South Indian history. The tour exposes us
to South Indian culture, historical sites, allied activities intended to engage us, to reflect and
interact with the local society, allowing the us to gather deep insights of it’s broad and diverse
nature.

PLACES VISITED
2.1 Day 01 - Mangalore - Udupi
The Study Tour started from Mangalore after arriving from Coimbatore. The first place of visit
was the Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi which is a thousand years old (13th century).
The unique feature of the temple is that the lord is not worshiped directly but through a window with
nine holes.
We got to understand the temple culture and history. It has avidian
style architecture.

This temple is famous for the world’s second tallest
shiva statue. It is surrounded on three sides by the water
of the Arabian sea.

2.2 Day 02 - Gokarna
The day started with a heritage walk heading towards Mahabaleshwar Temple and was able
to experience the culture of the temple town.

The temple is located in the site of religious pilgrimage with the deity of Lord Shiva. We
were able to experience the style of the temple streetscape.

2.3 Day 03 - Goa


The first day of goa started by visiting the Church Complex and Basilica of Bom Jesus which are
located in a pilgrimage center, opposite to each other.
It is considered to be one of the best examples of Baroque Architecture and is known to be one of
the oldest churches of India.
Heritage walk heading towards panaji
We were able to experience the urban planning of the city through this walk on streets.

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church

It is located in Panjim and sits atop of a hill facing the square below. The church is an example of
baroque style architecture.

We ended our day with a late evening cruise ride.

2.4 Day 04 - Goa


On the second day of Goa, we visited the Aguada Fort which overlooks the Arabian Sea.
Fort Aguada was the most prized and crucial fort of the Portuguese. The fort is so large that it
envelops the entire peninsula at the southwestern tip.

The rest of the day was spent street shopping, exploring the market and ended with the sunset at
the Calangute Beach.

2.5 Day 05 - Pune


By late afternoon, we were able to visit the MIT University in Pune where we had lunch and had
a campus tour.

They have state of the art infrastructure and use of traditional architecture features like arches,
domes and balconies can be seen.

We got to visit the raj kapoor memorial situated within the campus.

World Peace Dome


It is the biggest dome in the world and we got to experience the prayer hall and how it works.

2.6 Day 06 - Mumbai


The first day in Mumbai began with the climb up to Karla caves.
Karla caves is one of the most famous Buddhist rock-cut cave sites in India with only 15 caves
within. The main Chaitya Griha is one among the largest in India.

After the cave, we got to experience the Mumbai Art gallery and the Urban Art festival held near
the Kala Ghoda.

2.7 Day 07 - Mumbai
The second day was spent in a heritage walk exploring the streetscape architecture of Mumbai.

The heritage walk included places such as :


Town hall
Kala ghoda
Bombay high court
Oval maidan
Flora fountain
St. thomas cathedral church

From gothic architectural features such as arches, columns to use of exposed stone work can be
seen in many institutional buildings along the roads.

2.8 Day 08 - Aurangabad

The main attraction in Aurangabad was the Ellora caves. These are listed by UNESCO as a
World Heritage Site and are celebrated for its Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples and monuments
which were carved from the local cliff rock in the 6th to 8th century CE.
There are over 100 caves at the site 34 of which are open to the public and the sixteenth one is the
famous Kailashnath Temple.
After the ancient caves, we visited the daulatabad fort and bibi ka maqbara which is highly
contrasting to the cave temple architecture.
2.9 Day 09 - Vijaypura
A trip to Vijayapura has been started with the visit to Asar Mahal which serves as a Hall
of Justice. We can see a square tank in front of the mahal.
Bara Kaman was planned to build a mausoleum. It was planned to build 12 arches vertically and
horizontally around the tomb but it was left incomplete with 12 horizontally placed arches.

Ibrahim Roza,the next spot we headed is actually a tomb complex where Ibrahim Adil Shah II is
buried along with his wife. It is a square structure with twin buildings.
The Jamiya Masjid is the largest mosque in Vijayapura constructed in the Indo Islamic style.
The day in Vijayapura ended with visiting the Gol Gumbaz.It is a mausoleum and it is notable
for its scale and exceptionally large dome.

2.10 Day 10 - Hospete

The next day we marched towards Hospete where we started with Badami caves which are a
complex of Hindu and Jain temples. It is known to be one of the examples of Indian rock cut
architecture. It is composed of 6 caves.

Pattadakal is a holy place with 10 major temples of which 9 Hindu and 1 Jain. It is a fusion of two
major Indian Architectural styles, one from North India ( Nagara ) and other from South India (
Dravida ).

At last we ended our day by visiting Aihole Durga temple. It illustrates a mature example of the
Badami Chalukya Architecture.

2.11 Day 11 - Hassan


The temple town of Belur visit started with
Chennakesava Temple
The temple was built over 3 generations and took 103 years to complete. The Chennakesava
temple includes a number of small shrines and monuments with a water tank inside.

Hoysaleswara temple
It is simply referred to as Halebidu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a twin temple which are
of the same size and their sanctums open to East facing sunrise.

Doddagaddavalli Lakshmi
temple

The day ended with Doddagaddavalli temple dedicated to goddess Lakshmi. It consists of 4
shrines that share a common mandapa and each sanctum is square in shape.

2.12 Day 12 - Mysuru


The day in Mysuru started with worshipping the Lord Vishnu in Sri Ranganathaswamy
temple. The temple is one of considerable antiquity. The god is in reclining posture as found in
Srirangam.

St. Philomena’s cathedral is a Catholic church constructed using Neo Gothic style. It os one
of the tallest churches in Asia. This Church is a good example of blending of local culture

Mysore Palace
A three storied structure in the Indo-Saracenic style built between 1897-1912, the palace has
beautifully designed square towers at cardinal points, covered with domes.

The interior of the palace helped us understand the need for detailings in architecture.

2.13 Day 13 - Coorg

The day in Coorg started with visiting Golden Temple which is one of the largest Tibetan
settlements in India. The main entrance is an attractive four storey tower with a wheel portraying
symbols of Buddhism.

The rest of the day was spent shopping in the local market and returning to the Mangalore railway
station to board our train back to coimbatore after a memorable trip.

CONCLUSION

This educational trip helped us understand the architecture of South India


better and gave us a practical understanding of the details and work done in
historic monuments of India.
