PLACES VISITED
2.1 Day 01 - Mangalore - Udupi
The Study Tour started from Mangalore after arriving from Coimbatore. The first place of visit
was the Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi which is a thousand years old (13th century).
The unique feature of the temple is that the lord is not worshiped directly but through a window with
nine holes.
We got to understand the temple culture and history. It has avidian
style architecture.

2.2 Day 02 - Gokarna
The day started with a heritage walk heading towards Mahabaleshwar Temple and was able
to experience the culture of the temple town.
The temple is located in the site of religious pilgrimage with the deity of Lord Shiva. We
were able to experience the style of the temple streetscape.
It is located in Panjim and sits atop of a hill facing the square below. The church is an example of
baroque style architecture.
12
The rest of the day was spent street shopping, exploring the market and ended with the sunset at
the Calangute Beach.
They have state of the art infrastructure and use of traditional architecture features like arches,
domes and balconies can be seen.
We got to visit the raj kapoor memorial situated within the campus.
After the cave, we got to experience the Mumbai Art gallery and the Urban Art festival held near
the Kala Ghoda.
13
2.7 Day 07 - Mumbai
The second day was spent in a heritage walk exploring the streetscape architecture of Mumbai.
From gothic architectural features such as arches, columns to use of exposed stone work can be
seen in many institutional buildings along the roads.
14
The main attraction in Aurangabad was the Ellora caves. These are listed by UNESCO as a
World Heritage Site and are celebrated for its Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain temples and monuments
which were carved from the local cliff rock in the 6th to 8th century CE.
There are over 100 caves at the site 34 of which are open to the public and the sixteenth one is the
famous Kailashnath Temple.
After the ancient caves, we visited the daulatabad fort and bibi ka maqbara which is highly
contrasting to the cave temple architecture.
2.9 Day 09 - Vijaypura
A trip to Vijayapura has been started with the visit to Asar Mahal which serves as a Hall
of Justice. We can see a square tank in front of the mahal.
Bara Kaman was planned to build a mausoleum. It was planned to build 12 arches vertically and
horizontally around the tomb but it was left incomplete with 12 horizontally placed arches.
Ibrahim Roza, the next spot we headed is actually a tomb complex where Ibrahim Adil Shah II is
buried along with his wife. It is a square structure with twin buildings.
The Jamiya Masjid is the largest mosque in Vijayapura constructed in the Indo Islamic style.
The day in Vijayapura ended with visiting the Gol Gumbaz. It is a mausoleum and it is notable
for its scale and exceptionally large dome.
The next day we marched towards Hospete where we started with Badami caves which are a
complex of Hindu and Jain temples. It is known to be one of the examples of Indian rock cut
architecture. It is composed of 6 caves.
Pattadakal is a holy place with 10 major temples of which 9 Hindu and 1 Jain. It is a fusion of two
major Indian Architectural styles, one from North India ( Nagara ) and other from South India (
Dravida ).
15
At last we ended our day by visiting Aihole Durga temple. It illustrates a mature example of the
Badami Chalukya Architecture.
Hoysaleswara temple
It is simply referred to as Halebidu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a twin temple which are
of the same size and their sanctums open to East facing sunrise.
Doddagaddavalli Lakshmi
temple
The day ended with Doddagaddavalli temple dedicated to goddess Lakshmi. It consists of 4
shrines that share a common mandapa and each sanctum is square in shape.
16
St. Philomena’s cathedral is a Catholic church constructed using Neo Gothic style. It os one
of the tallest churches in Asia. This Church is a good example of blending of local culture
Mysore Palace
A three storied structure in the Indo-Saracenic style built between 1897-1912, the palace has
beautifully designed square towers at cardinal points, covered with domes.
The interior of the palace helped us understand the need for detailings in architecture.
17
The day in Coorg started with visiting Golden Temple which is one of the largest Tibetan
settlements in India. The main entrance is an attractive four storey tower with a wheel portraying
symbols of Buddhism.
The rest of the day was spent shopping in the local market and returning to the Mangalore railway
station to board our train back to coimbatore after a memorable trip.
