MWD/LWD SERVICE

Short Collar Correction

A short-collar correction algorithm (Survey Correction Programme) for solid state
magnetic surveys, eliminates the need to run an extensive length of non-magnetic
material to obtain a magnetic-non disturbed azimuth, by means of an axial correction. The
correction program needs accurate local geomagnetic data obtained from either the
British Geological Survey (BGS) model (BGGM) or from locally measured data (IFR).

When correcting magnetic surveys the MWD can be run in a standard non-magnetic
collar. The Bz magnetometer measuring the axial magnetic component will measure a
magnetically interfered azimuth due to the steel below and above the MWD collar. SCC
will correct for the axial interference using the local geomagnetic data and the two other
magnetometers sensors values (Bx and By).

When SCC corrections should NOT be used (NO-SCC zone)

Magnetic interference programmes should not be used in high Inclination wells (from +/-
60 degrees inclination), which are drilled in an easterly or westerly direction. The azimuth
uncertainties due to the SCC axial correction will become unacceptable. These
uncertainties will depend on the tool attitude and hence well path and the sensor
calibrations.
The cut-off point to use SCC is +/- 1.5 degrees of azimuth uncertainty.
