Status Indicators
Definitions of the Status Indicators:
Stable Indicates whether the tool has been kept stable enough for a good acquisition.
Azimuth Indicates whether the Directional module is pointing in the correct compass direction.
High Side Indicates whether the current tool face orientation (high side) is within the target zone
for the acquisition.
Inclination Indicates whether the inclination of the Directional Module is correct.

an acceptable location.
1. With the MWD Calibration Roll Test window open (see Figure 8 on page 8), align your
Directional module so that it points north.
2. In the Menu bar, click on File and select New Roll Test, as shown in Figure 20.

The Current Roll Test Information window opens, as shown in Figure 21 on page 14.

Figure 21.
ft

Click the OK button
when you are done.
The New Roll Test Opened dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 22.
D
4. To start the roll test data acquisition, click the Yes button.
The Roll Test Acquisition Options window opens, as shown in Figure 23. The Roll Test
Acquisition Options window provides three data acquisition types for you to choose from:
Manual
This option enables you to acquire or skip data acquisition at each new position prior to moving
to the next position that is indicated in the Compass Rose and in the User Instructions field.
You must evaluate the data and position the Directional module before accepting to store the
measurements to the database.
Caution! Do not click the Acquire button until all Status Indicators appear green.
Automatic (recommended)
The MWD Calibration Roll Test Utility automatically records the data in the database once the
requirements for the position and the stability of the Directional Module are met. Bench Tree
highly recommends this option.
Wait for the program to acquire all measurements to ensure the integrity of

Fixed Time Interval
the data.
This option enables you to set a fixed time interval for the data acquisition. This means that you
ra
determine how much time elapses between readings and the repositioning of your Directional
module. Bench Tree advises not to use this mode, because if the positions and stability are not
met when the data is acquired, it can result in erroneous data being stored to the database.
The following steps are based on the Automatic Acquisition Type and the assumption that you have
positioned your Directional module horizontally facing north.
D
5. Select the Automatic radio button, if it is not already selected.
6. Click the Start button to start the roll test.
Bench Tree recommends that you keep the default setting (Automatic) selected to ensure
Note that you will get all the necessary data of your Directional module that you need to
determine whether it is functioning correctly.
The moment you click the Start button, the MWD Calibration Roll Test Utility begins acquiring data.
This data is then immediately displayed in the MWD Calibration Roll Test window, as shown in
Figure 24. The example in Figure 24 shows that the tool face orientation (high side) of the Directional
module is not yet within the target zone. The red wedge, which indicates the current tool face
orientation (high side) of your Directional module, must be positioned inside the green wedge,
preferably centered.

and then rotate the
Directional module
to the next position.
Figure 24: Data displays in the MWD Calibration Roll Test window
If the tool face orientation (high side) of your Directional module is not yet aligned properly, do the
following:
7. Slowly rotate the Directional module until the red wedge displays within the target zone (green
wedge) and the Status Indicators appear green, as shown in Figure 25. When the Status
Indicators appear green, data acquisition begins.

When the data acquisition is complete, a red arrow displays in the Compass Rose indicating to rotate
the Directional Module to the next target zone (green wedge). Refer to Figure 26 on page 18.
8. Slowly rotate the Directional Module to the 45° target orientation as indicated by the Compass
Rose and the User Instructions field, shown in Figure 26.

Instructions pane

instructions.

D
While the Compass Rose provides a visual indicator that you must rotate the Directional
Note module to the 45° mark (to the right), the User Instructions field provides the
corresponding steps.
When the Directional module is positioned correctly, the Compass Rose should look similar to the
one shown in Figure 27 on page 19.

If a data graph appears red, it indicates that the data is outside the specified limit. Check
all the connections and make sure you follow the instructions of the software exactly. If
the graph remains red, then the following issues might apply:
Note
Magnetic interference causes the magnetic field to fluctuate too much for the sensors
to take an accurate reading.
There are issues with the Directional module itself that require evaluation.
10. Continue to follow the steps indicated in the Compass Rose and the User Instructions field until
you have reached the 315° mark (8th data point).
After the 8th data point is measured and recorded at 315° (±5.0°), the Compass Rose and the User
Instructions field indicate to pivot the Directional module so that it points to the east. Refer to Figure
28 on page 20.

When you pivot the stand with the Directional module to the east, you must make sure

11. Continue to follow the steps indicated in the Compass Rose and the User Instructions field
through the East and South positions.
After you have acquired the data for the 315° mark (8th data point) with the Directional module in the
horizontal position pointing south, the User Instructions pane directs you to align the Directional
module into the vertical position.
