Finishes

There are 2 primary stone finishes we use in this project:

1. A polished finish installed is a glossy surface that reflects light and emphasizes the color
and markings of the material.
2. A honed finish is a white smooth surface with relatively little reflection of light. Generally, a
honed finish is installed on all floors and other locations where heavy traffic will wear off the
polished finish. A honed finish also installed on furniture and joineries.

Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

When discussing care and cleaning procedures with your maintenance staff, there are
recommended do’s and don’ts that should always be followed:

1. Do dust mop floors frequently.

2. Do clean surfaces with mild detergent or stone soap.
3. Do thoroughly rinse and dry the surface with clean, clear water after washing.
4. Do blot up spills immediately.
5. Do protect floor surfaces with non-slip mats or area rugs and countertop surfaces with
coasters, trivets, or placemats.
6. Don’t use vinegar, lemon juice, or other cleaners containing acids on marble and granite
surfaces.
7. Don’t use cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, or tub & tile
cleaners.
8. Don’t use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers or soft cleansers. Don’t mix bleach and
ammonia; this combination creates a toxic and lethal gas. Don’t ever mix chemicals together
unless directions specifically instructed to do so.
9. Don’t use vacuum cleaners that are worn. The metal or plastic attachments or the wheels
may scratch the stone’s surface.

Guidelines for Stain and Spill Removal

When dealing with stain, we must identify which type of stain are we dealing woth. Different
kind of stain demands a different kind of steps to be undertaken. Investigate and identify what

causes the stain. Look if it is organic, oil-based, metallic, ink, paint, biological, etch marks,
efflorescence or water marks or rings.

Generally, in dealing with stains, the first step is to blot the stain or spill immediately. Avoid
wiping the spill or stain to prevent it from spreading. Clean the area with mild detegent and rinse
with water. Repeat the process, if needed. If stain or spill still remains, contact your stone care and
maintenance provider.

OIL-BASED STAINS, ORGANIC & BIOLOGICAL

You can clearly identify oil-based stains thru physical examination. Oil-based stains may
come from milk, cooking oil, beauty product ot grease from automotive or any with mechanical
properties while organic stain would come from bird droppings, wood, fruits stains and etc. To
remove this kind of stain, clean with a mild detergent combined with bleach. Rinse with water and
dry with soft cloth. Repeat the process, if necessary.

INK, PAINT

First step in removing ink stain is to blot the spill immediately and clean with a diluted
household bleach. Then dry with damp cloth. Repeat the procedure, if deemed necessary. For paint
spill and stains, this stains can be removed thru wood or plastic scraper and for heavy paint
spillage, use a paint stripper available in your local hardware. Be sure to always read the
instructions labeled in the container of the paint stripper.

METALLIC STAIN

Stones stained thru metals can and maybe removed thru using a poultice. A poultice is a
paste froemd from the mixture of cleaning chemical and calciumine. It is then applied to the stain
and left to dry for 48 hours. Poultice will sip the stain from the stone. Application of poultice may be
repeated if deemed necessary. Some deep-seeded metallic stains may not be removed by this.

EFFLORESCENCE

You can removed efflorescence by dusting or mopping. Efflorescence will eventually ceased
once the installed stone had dried up. If efflorescences still appear once the stone had dried up,
contact your stone care and maintenance provider.

ETCH MARKS, WATER MARKS & RINGS

Removal of these can be done thru buffing of the stone with polishing pad and polishing
powder.

Cleaning Do’s and Don’ts

2. Do clean your tile floor with a mild detergent or tile cleaner.
3. Do blot up spill immediately.
4. Do use felt protectors under your furniture and chairs.
5. Do use mats or area rugs inside and outside an entrance.
6. Don't use cleaners containing acids or ammonia. Acids may damage the grout and the glazed
surface of the tile. Ammonia my discolor the grout.
7. Don't use oil soaps or waxes to clean your tile.
8. Don't slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across your floor WITHOUT ANY PROTECTION
TO THE FLOORING.
9. Protect your floor by using a dolly.

Frequently, dust mop your floor using non-treated dry mop. Sand, dirt and grit do the most
damage to tile floors due to their abrasiveness. Mats or area rugs inside and outside an entrance
will help minimize this. Be sure that the underside of the mat or rug is non-slip surface. Do not use
worn vacuum cleaner. Metal or plastic attachments or their wheel may scratch the surface.
