In order that he play these patterns with little effort, the drummer should practice the following arm exercises. Each exercise should first be memorized and played without using the Bass Drum and Hi-Hat. After the particular oxercise has been memorized, add the Hi-Hat and then finally the Bass Drum. The Bass Drum although written in } is optional as to the ap- plication in each oxereise, but the Hi-Hat should always be on tho 2nd and 4th beat of the measure. He studied locally for two years and then decided to commute to New York to further his musical education. He studied percussion under Henry Adler, vibes under Phil Kraus and piano with Danny Hurd. Due to the lack of work in his home area, he spent most of his time practicing, He credits the long hours of study for the unusual brilliant technique he has developed on the drums. After serving in the Armed Forces on Okinawa for two yearshe settled in New York City and began his professional career. He has played wit Marion McPartland, Chet Baker, Al Hirt, Kai Wind- ing, Teddy Charles and Peter Nero among others. SECTION I INTRODUCTION AND EXERCISES INTRODUCTION: With the complexity of today’s modorn jazz patterns and rhythmic figures, the progressive drummer would do well to remember that the Snare Drum is the focal point of his drum outfit, and that most of the patterns presented herein eminate from the Snare Drum. ‘The purpose of this book is to enable the drummer to develop a better knowledge in playing around the drums, using Snare Drum, Small Tom Tom and Large Tom Tom. Attention should be called to the sticking of the various patterns. You will note that most of the patterns employ the use of single strokes, starting with the left hand, At the end of each pattern, the sticking will change, (i.e. for triplet patterns and for sixtecnth pattorne {FP z). This at will allow the drummer to come back to the ride cymbal without unnecessary or confusing sticking. att Some of the patterns written inthis book may seem quite hard and involved at first, but if practiced diligently, they will become quite easy to play. These patterns are to be worked up to a speed that is within the drummer's ability to play with accuracy. Remember: - Speed without accuracy, maintenance of sound and form are worth- Jess to a progressive and conscientious drummer. ‘The code and rules shown at the top of tho following page will be used throughout this book. The drummer will notice that the code is similar to his drum set-up.
