Analysis and Interpretation Investigatory Project GUIDE

1. The student conducted an experiment to test if water freezes faster with sugar added. 2. Data from three trials showed that water with sugar took less time to freeze than water alone in each trial. Specifically, water with sugar took 180 minutes total to freeze compared to 225 minutes for water alone. 3. The line graph further supported that water containing sugar had a consistently shorter freezing duration compared to plain water across the three trials. Therefore, the hypothesis that water freezes faster with sugar was accepted.

Data Gathering,

Analysis, and
Interpretation
3rd Quarter Investigatory Project
Scientific
Method
Which among these
steps allows you to
gather data/results?
Situation :
Question: Can water freeze faster with sugar in it?

Hypothesis: If sugar is added in the water, then the water will freeze faster than a
water with no sugar added.

Experiment: You filled two identical containers with the same amount of room
temperature water. You added 25 grams of sugar to one of the containers. Then,
you placed the two containers into the freezer. At regular intervals of 15 minutes,
you open the freezer and observe the status of the water in each container. You
continued checking until both have completely frozen. For your first trial, the water
with sugar took 45 minutes to be frozen while the water with no sugar took 60
minutes to be frozen. For second and third trials, the water with sugar took 60
minutes and 75 minutes to be frozen respectively while the water with no sugar
took 75 minutes and 90 minutes to freeze respectively.
Data Tabulation
Tables are used to organize data that is too detailed or complicated to be
described adequately in the text, allowing the reader to quickly see the
results (Slutsky, 2014).
Table 1. Freezing Duration of water only and water with sugar.

Water with sugar 45 minutes 60 minutes 75 minutes

Water only 60 minutes 75 minutes 90 minutes

Table 1 shows the freezing duration of water only and water with sugar in the three (3) trials
conducted. As can be seen in the data, the freezing duration of water with sugar took 45 minutes in
the first trial, 60 minutes in the second trial and 75 minutes for the third trial. On the other hand, the
freezing duration of water alone took 60 minutes in the first trial, 75 minutes in the second trial and 90
minutes in the third trial. Obviously, in each trial there are 15 minutes gap between the freezing
duration of the water with sugar and water only. Entirely, the water with sugar took 180 minutes to
freeze while water alone took 225 minutes to freeze for all trials.

Graphs and Charts
To show trends, patterns, and relationships across and between
datasets (Slutsky, 2014).
Bar Chart
Bar charts are especially effective when you have data that can be split into multiple
categories.

Line Chart
Use line charts to view trends in data, usually over time (like stock price changes over five
years or website page views for the month).

Pie Chart

Pie charts can be used to show percentages of a whole, and represents percentages at a set
point in time. Unlike bar graphs and line graphs, pie charts do not show changes over time.

only. The water only and water with sugar were observed for every 15 minutes.

Figure 1 shows the increasing duration in freezing the water and water with
sugar in the three trials conducted. Despite there is an increasing duration for
freezing, water with sugar has lesser duration for freezing since the orange
line is below the black line which means values of black line is bigger than
orange line. In addition, the duration of freezing the water with sugar have
the same increase with the duration of freezing of the water only. This is
shown in the same steepness of the orange and black lines. However, there
can be a small discrepancy in the data gathered since it is obviously shown
in the graph that the increase of freezing duration in each trial is 15 minutes.
This could be due to the fact that observation of the set-ups is done for every
15 minutes.
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION,
and RECOMMENDATION
SUMMARY
1. This aligned with the statement of the problem of your investigatory project.
2. Present the statement of the problem followed by the findings of your IP using the data
and evidence from the previous part of your IP.

The findings of the study were summarized below:

Question: Can water freeze faster with sugar in it?

It was drawn in table 1 that the total duration of freezing of water

only is 225 minutes while the duration of freezing the water with
sugar is 180 minutes only. In addition, the line graph revealed that
the line for water with sugar is below the line for the water only. It
means the duration of freezing of the water with sugar is lower
than the duration of freezing of the water only. It only indicates
that the hypothesis is accepted.
CONCLUSION
1. These are realization anchored to your findings from the data gathered.
2. This is a synthesis of your key points.
3. The hypothesis can be answered in this part.

With the findings in both table and graph, the

conclusion below was drawn:

1. The experiment reveals that water with

sugar will freeze faster than water only when
left in the freezer.
RECOMMENDATION
1. Based on the conclusion of the study.
2. This should not be in demanding tone.

This study revealed the effectiveness of sugar in lessening the freezing

duration of water. Thus, the following recommendations are hereby
presented:

1. Since, the effectiveness of sugar has been proven, sugar can be added
to water when freezing it especially when in a rush.

2. The sugar can be used by businesses related to ices such milktea

shops, fast foods chains and etc. to easily produce ice for their
products or goods.
