About Chiguru Ashrama

Chiguru Ashrama is a non-governmental organization located in a remote area
of the Industrial area in Koorgally, Mysore, which rescues and treats women
from the streets who are in very poor conditions and are
mentally retarded.
Chiguru Ashrama is a part of the Home again project started in
Chennai. This project intends to help people on streets to reunite with their
family after treating them. The people in charge of the Ashrama (Sushma and
Sumalatha),are contacted either by strangers or by the police regarding
helpless women on the streets and then they take these women under their
wing and treat them. The Ashrama has to get them tested first and obtain a
medical certificate and then treat them accordingly.

The next thing the Ashrama does is tracking their families on the basis of a
certificate provided by the police. They aim to find their respective families
and send them back to live with them forever. But if they cannot find their
families or if their families are not willing to take them in, then the Ashrama
will take care of them as their own.
There are two branches of the Chiguru Ashrama, both in the same area. When
a woman is rescued from the streets, she is first brought to the branch which
is in a more remote place and is treated. They have cows, birds, fishes in there
which serves as therapy to these women. Once they see improvement in the
woman’s condition, they try contacting her families. If they do not show up,
then they are moved to a more open place, which is the other branch, located
slightly uphill from the former. A nurse from the nearby hospital visits every
week to monitor the condition of these women.

These women, who are moved to the new branch are taught certain skills like
cooking, knitting, tailoring,etc., aiming to make them independent and to
make them able to earn for themselves. They also assign chores to these
women and make them do it every day, like helping the person in charge to
cook, cleaning the house etc. These women do their chores like washing their
clothes and all by themselves every day.

People nearby donate their old clothes to these women and some really kind
people buy new clothes and give it to the Ashrama during the donor’s
birthday or some other occasion.If suppose any of the patients are
intolerable and are very violent, then they are sent to RVM in Bangalore, to
treat them.

Spending time with them, we realized that they were very enthusiastic even
though life had treated them really unfair. They enjoyed every activity we
made them do, it was really inspiring

We as a group of 6 members decided to visit the Chiguru Ashrama and conduct
sessions on various aspects. We went there and as a group we organized various
talks on different topics, interacted with each member .We also taught them
different games and made them draw various pictures. We individually heard each
one of their stories shared by them and made them feel comfortable with us. We
made them play different games and taught them how to interact with each other.
Outcome It was really a great experience .We understood the value of what love was by
spending time with the elderly. Their affectionate souls touched us deeply and we
were really grateful for the Ashram to give us this great opportunity.
