Teaching Magic April
Teaching magic and mentoring is something that you should not take lightly.
Some get into magic to make a quick buck. They buy a bunch of cheap magic, rent
a party room at the community center, and run a “Magic Camp”. Does owning a
calculator, some pencils and a tax guide make you an accountant? Same rule
applies to being a magic instructor. It is more than buying tricks and setting up
shop. Students expect to learn something from your classes. One student might
not know anything about magic, another might be very well versed in it. As the
teacher you need to be prepared to take on both types of students. You need a
course outline; you need to know how to instruct and work with people. Teaching
is the gift of sharing knowledge and the love of learning. Think back on who your
first teacher was. You want your students to remember you as their mentor long
after your classes end. With summer coming there are plenty of opportunities to
teach magic. The Guide to Teaching Magic by Alfred Albers is an excellent book.
Be prepared before you jump into teaching. Know how to entertain all age
groups. Bad acts and bad teachers ruin it for everyone.
Now I think it is time to have some fun.
Magic Time: Just My Luck; You start with a small packet of red backed cards face
down in your hand. “In a moment I will show you the faces of the cards, but I do
not want them to influence you. Let me start by counting them off into two piles
and mixing them”. As you are talking start dealing the cards face down left to
right. Your left side will have four cards the right will have three. Put the three
cards on top of the left pile and deal again. You can do this as your talking and ask
the spectator when you should stop. It does not matter how many times you deal
if you remember to always place the right-hand packet on top of the left-hand
packet. Once they say stop you finish dealing and you are back to holding a small
packet of cards again. “Cards have four suits two red and two black”. “As the
cards are red on the back let’s try and find a black card after all that mixing”. “All
we need to do is spell BLACK”. Deal one card off the top of the deck onto the
table. At K turn over the card it will be a black face card. “I was doing this
yesterday and someone told me all the cards were the same color”. “I told them
that’s close all these cards are the same color and you found the only one that
was different”. Now show the faces of the other 6 cards to be all red-faced cards.
Modus Operandi: To see how adaptable this move is check out the January 2023
Annual English Parade contribution by James Ward called “The Love of My Life”.
He found it in the book The Rainbow Force. I saw somebody using this count for
an ESP trick on YouTube.
For my effect, you need 6 red cards and 1 black card. At the start the black card is
5th from the top of the packet. As you deal back and forth say, “let me mix these
cards to make sure they are not in any order. Whenever you’re ready please say
stop”. The dealing doesn’t matter it always brings the black card back to the 5 th
position. As you go back and forth left to right it looks like the cards are being
mixed. When they say stop you finish off the dealing and assemble the cards into
one packet again. Remember the right-hand pile (3 cards) always goes on top of
the left-hand pile (4 cards). Now spell black and on K you can reveal the black
card. I really like this effect. Playing cards work well but you can have one black
card and 6 blank face cards. You can use index cards or business cards and have
red 0’s on 6 of them and one big black X on the other card. You can have 7 jokers.
Use the ones in color and one black and white joker. You can have 6 cards that
spell LOOSE one card spells LUCKY and they find the lucky card. Think it through
and come up with an idea of your own.
Enjoy and practice your magic until next time.
