Technology Programs For Agriculture

The document discusses several technology platforms and programs created by the Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to help smallholder farmers and businesses. These include Farm Konek, an inventory management tool for farmers, and OneStore.ph, an e-commerce platform that helps small businesses sell products online. DOST also introduced OneStore City, a same-day delivery app for farm products. Additionally, PhilRice developed a four-in-one rice combine harvester to reduce post-harvest losses for rice farmers. These technologies aim to increase farmer incomes through better production and inventory tracking, expanded markets, and reduced crop losses.

Technology Programs for Agriculture

By Sarah Gwyneth I. Abriol

In spite of offering high-quality and fresh farm products, the earnings of the local
farmers still suffer. By this, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) created
and offered several technology-based platforms where the livelihood options of social
marketing and data analysis might expand and the earnings for regional smallholder
farmers and micro, small, and medium companies (MSMEs) will boost.

Regarded as the foundation of the Philippine economy, Agriculture, is essential to

enhance the national economy, yet it faces a lot of difficulties that have an impact on the
farmers’ income. Farm Konek, a farm management tool for inventory and management
that focuses on community impact, was created and developed by Project Zacchaeus
because of the corresponding problems. The tool seeks to produce a sustainable
grouped production of high-value and lowland vegetables. “If you look at the population
ng mga farmer sa buong Pilipinas, mostly they are smallholder farmers and we know
naman na maraming platforms out there that offer marketing services but in reality, it is
not known to be sustainable kung hindi natin namomonitor ng maayos ang production
and inventory lalo na iyong mga maliliit na magsasaka,” said John Gastanes, general
manager of Project Zacchaeus. Numerous marketing opportunities that purchase
products directly from smallholder farmers through a powerful marketing network were
offered by the government. One of the main worries, though, is the continuous
production. Farm Konek’s main plan includes capacity building, inventory management,
and reporting systems as many smallholder farmers are still not aware of climate
change protocols and new production techniques. Another technological platform that
DOST has launched is OneStore.ph, an e-commerce platform that helps MSMEs sell
their products online. The platform lets MSMEs reach a bigger audience with their
products, which indirectly increases employment creation and addresses the issue of
food scarcity in the nation. Because of the pandemic, the operations of OneStore.ph
increased, which restricted people from traveling. The walk-in transactions were also
lessened because of the shutdown, but on the positive side, a lot of people were using
the e-commerce platform, which led to a growth in sales. DOST introduced OneSTore
City, stimulating the current trend, an android delivery software that was created and
designed to give customers a better and easier shopping experience. The software was
made as a same-day delivery app for fresh and important farm products, which
increases the sales of local farmers’. With agriculture being bothered by several
problems, the Philippine Research Institute (PhilRice) created a four-in-one rice
combine harvester to address these issues, and it might cut off the post-harvest losses
of Filipino farmers from 4.5% to 2.2%. Sponsored by the Philippine Council for
Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development under the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCAARRD), the made Combine
Harvester makes use of the best hand tractors, which are a popular piece of farming
equipment among rice farmers in the country. Making assembling and disassembling
from the hand tractor unit simple. The harvesting, cleaning, winnowing, and bagging
processes are already merged by this locally-made and developed rice harvester. It
might answer the issues restricting the rice production of the nation.

These newly developed technologies could help the nation’s attempt to achieve food
availability by addressing the shortage of agricultural manpower, providing our farmers
with higher earnings, productivity increase, and more.
