Dear Parents

The Commonwealth Essay Competition topics have been announced for the year 2023. Every year
the students of LACAS participate in this competition and win awards. One of our winners, Raniya
Hosain received her award at the Buckingham Palace in a Special Awards Ceremony. A list of
topics for the competition is as follows. Please ensure your child chooses the correct category
according to their age group.

SENIOR CATEGORY (Word Limit 1400)


BORN BETWEEN 1 JULY 2004 AND 30 JUNE 2009 (14-18 YEARS OF AGE)
1. As Head of the Commonwealth, His Majesty The King is opening an international
conference on the importance of young people in decision making. Write his speech.
2. Does age matter?
3. The 2023 year of Youth was a moment of significant social change - what was its impact on
the world?
4. Script a dialogue between two people, with contrasting viewpoints, on an issue that divides
generations.
JUNIOR CATEGORY (Word Limit 750)
BORN ON OR AFTER 1 JULY 2009 (UNDER 14 YEARS OF AGE)
1. In fiction and throughout history, young people have performed numerous acts of heroism.
Choose your favourite young hero and write to them about why you admire them.
2. What is your youthful superpower, and how can it make a positive difference to the world?
3. You have been stranded on a planet where everyone is 18 or under. Journal your experience.
4. Why does your voice matter?
Guidelines:
- The essays must bear the topic, student’s name, class/ section, date of birth and the word
count in bold.
- All softcopies must be in Font: Times New Roman with size 12 for the text and 14 for
the headings. All entries must be in English
- Students are asked to present their work in the format that best conveys their message,
be that an essay, poem or letter.
Awards:
- One winner and runner-up will be chosen from each category.
- Winners and Runners-up will be flown to London for a week of educational and cultural
events, culminating in a special Awards Ceremony.
- A number of Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards will be given in both the Senior and
Junior categories, rewarding excellence in writing.
- All students will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Students should submit their essays directly to their respective English teachers and email a soft
copy to: it.vlc@lacas-schoolnetwork.edu.pk on or before: Grades X-XI – 14 April 2023
Grades I-IX – 21 April 2023
