Solidworks Assignment 1

This document provides an overview of solid modeling and manufacturing processes. It discusses engineering drawings, computer-aided design (CAD) software like SolidWorks, and how it can be used for modeling parts and assemblies. Key topics covered include the different views used in drawings, title blocks, CAD tools, assembly modeling using mates, and the drawing modules in SolidWorks.

• Introduction to engineering drawing

An engineering drawing is a type of technical drawing that is used to convey

information about an object. They are technical drawings that show the shape,
structure, dimensions, tolerances, accuracy, and other requirements of a part in the
form of a plan. It helps to define the requirements of an engineering part and conveys
the design concept in a disciplined manner.

1. VIEWS
o Isometric view.
o Orthographic
view.
o Flat pattern view.
o Section view.
o Cut-out view.
o Detail view.
o Auxiliary view.

2. TITLE BLOCK
Title blocks are used to record all important information necessary for the
working drawings. They contain general as well as specific information. The
data may refer to company policy or to the drawing. The form and information
vary from company to company.

3. TOOLS
o Pencil.
o Drawing sheet.
o Drawing board.
o Mini drafter.
o T square.
o Compass.
o Divider.
o Set squares.
• INTRODUCTION TO CAD
CAD stands for ‘Computer Aided Design’. It is the use of computers to aid in the
creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD is used to
accomplish preliminary design and layouts, design details and calculations.
CAD software enables efficiency in the quality of design, increase in the
Engineer’s productivity, improve record keeping through better documentation and
communication.

1. USES

CAD is one part of the whole digital product development (DPD) activity
within the product lifecycle management (PLM) processes, and as such is
used together with other tools, which are either integrated modules or stand-
alone products.

2. TYPES OF CAD SOFTWARES

o 2D CAD.
o 3D CAD.
o 3D Wireframe and Surface Modeling.
o Solid Modeling.

3. EXAMPLES OF CAD SOFTWARE

o Solid Works.
o Inventor.
o AutoCAD.
o Fusion 360
• INTRODUCTION TO SOLIDWORKS
SolidWorks is a solid modeling computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided
engineering (CAE) application published by Dassault Systèmes. SolidWorks is
structured in three basic types: part mode, assembly mode and drawing mode. Part
mode is the basic building block in this software. Assembly mode contains parts or
other assemblies, called sub-assemblies.

• ASSEMBLY MODELLING
Assembly modeling is a technology and method used by CAD and product
visualization computer software systems to handle multiple files that represent
components within a product. The components within an assembly are represented
as solid or surface models.

1. EXPLODED VIEW
An exploded view drawing is a diagram, picture, schematic or technical
drawing of an object, that shows the relationship or order of assembly of
various parts. The projection of an exploded view is usually shown from
above and slightly in diagonal from the left or right side of the drawing.

2. MATES
Mates are constraints that hold components together in SOLIDWORKS
assemblies. Like relations in sketches, they are geometric conditions
relating one entity to another.
Types of mates are

o Standard mates: Standard mates include angle, coincident,

concentric, distance, and lock, parallel, perpendicular, and tangent
mates.

o Advanced mates: Include limit, linear/linear coupler, path, profile

center, symmetry, and width mates.

o Mechanical mates: Include cam-follower, gear, hinge, rack and

pinion, screw, slot, and universal joint mates.
• INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING MODULES

1. TITLE BLOCK
A title block is comprised of the information boxes found on the bottom
right-hand corner of a drawing, which indicate drawing details such as the
title, author name, scale, and date the drawing was created.

2. SHEET SIZES
A4 (210 X 297)
A3 (297 X 420)
A2 (420 X 594)
A1 (594 X 841)
A0 (841 X 1189)

3. VIEWS
Isometric view (Top, left, right. Front).
Orthographic view.
Flat pattern view.
Section view.
Cut-out view.
Detail view.
Auxiliary view.

4. BILL OF MATERIALS
o Drawing sheet.
o Drawing board.
o Mini drafter.
o T square.
o Compass.
o Divider.
O Set squares.
O Clinograph.
o Protractor.
o French curves.
o Templates.
O Pencils.
o Eraser.
