Basic Conflict - Moana

Definition

What Is Conflict in Literature?

In literature, a conflict is a literary device characterized by a struggle between two opposing forces.
Conflict provides crucial tension in any story and is used to drive the narrative forward.

It is often used to reveal a deeper meaning in a narrative while highlighting characters’ motivations,
values, and weaknesses.

Basic Conflict in Pychology : BASIC CONFLICT: "When basic conflict occurs in a person, the response can
be in a variety of ways which involve approach and/or avoidance."

Basic conflict is the main trigger or process that will make a complete conflict.

Type of Conflict in Literature

All conflict falls into two categories: internal and external.

Internal conflict is when a character struggles with their own opposing desires or beliefs. It happens
within them, and it drives their development as a character. type in this internal conflict is like character
vs self conflict, internal strife will stem from a debate that occurs within a character. It might originate
from any combination of the character’s expectations, desires, duties, and fears. To get what they want,
they must make a choice that threatens to change the very fabric of who they are.

External conflict sets a character against something or someone beyond their control. External forces
stand in the way of a character’s motivations and create tension as the character tries to reach their
goals. External conflicts are divided into several types, namely:

- Character vs. Character(s)

Character vs. character conflict is commonly rendered as the traditional “protagonist vs. antagonist”
setup, where these two central characters will usually have diametrically opposing goals.

- Character vs. Society

In this type of conflict, society will put pressure on our character to change and fall neatly into order.this
type of external struggle pits the individual against the collective. In this case, “the collective” might take
the form of something like: an oppressive government, adults (as seen from a teenager’s perspective),
or systemic corruption.

- Character vs. Nature

In this type of conflict, that is exactly what our protagonists are facing.Stories that feature a “character
vs. nature” conflict will usually center on a character’s survival.
- Character vs. Technology

Some see scientific progress as a defiance of God and the natural, while others have used it to question
the limits of our morality, patience, and greed. While the idea of ‘character vs. technology’ might
summon up the image of a Terminator-like robot apocalypse, this type of conflict could also be as
modest as someone struggling to teach their Grandma Millie how to use emojis!

- Character vs. Supernatural

In practice, character vs supernatural conflicts will often see the protagonist face off against the forces
of fate, religion, ghosts, gods, demons or aliens. When your hero finds themselves up against something
that cannot be explained by logic or science, they are probably in conflict with supernatural forces.

- Character vs. Fate

“Character vs. fate” can include dealings with God or the gods and their prophecies — where our
protagonists desperately try to assert their free will. This is a common trope in Greek tragedies, where
the characters can do nothing but endure the destinies befallen to them.

Including both internal and external conflict is crucial for a good story, because life always includes both.
