St. Pio of Pietrelcina
Padre Pio was not only an obedient child to his parents; he was also very obedient to God. His
parents named him Francesco in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.
Padre Pio was very prayerful child. He became a Capuchin Novice at a young age of sixteen. He
became a priest after seven years of study and became known as Padre Pio.
On September 20, 1918, Padre Pio was kneeling in front of a large crucifix when he received the
visible marks of the crucifixion, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church. The
blood from the stigmata had an odor described as similar to perfume or flowers. The doctor who examines
him could not find ant natural cause for the wounds. Upon his death in 1968, the wounds were no longer
visible. In fact, there was no scarring and the skin was completely renewed. He also had the gift of
bilocation, which means that he could be in two places at the same time. He also had the ability to read the
hearts of those who come to him for confession. Padre Pio heard confession for ten to twelve hours per day
and brought people closer to God. He was a faithful follower of God-full of love and compassion towards
his fellowmen.
My Faith Words
Family as “domestic church” - this means that family is where the first knowledge of
God is nurtured and it is where the first worship of
God is experienced
Honor - the virtue which is mentioned in the Fourth
Commandments, done by respecting, loving, and
obeying through respect, love and obedience
stigmata - the wounds of Jesus inflicted by God upon the body
of some saints. They consist of the five wounds of Jesus which
are the nail wounds in the hands and feet, along with the wound
in the side, next to the heart. They can be either visible or
invisible. The main purpose of the stigmata is so the saint may
suffer in union with Jesus for the conversion of sinners, that is,
for the redemption of humanity

LESSON 12
We Respect Life
Life is a sacred gift from God. All are called to cherish, promote, and respect the gift of life.
God alone is the giver of life. See how the couple in the story was blessed for their faith in God and
love for life.

Taking Care of Life
Judith and her husband, Benjie, love children. They are God-fearing Catholics. They serve the poor
and engage themselves in charity work especially in pro-life activities. They believe that life should be
promoted, respected, and cherished.
Judith and Benjie have been married for ten years already, however they have no child. They tried
all natural means possible. Judith is turning 45 years old this year but instead of losing hope, she prays day
and night with her husband. They offer to God not only prayers and petitions but acts of charity as well.
They knew that a child will complete their family and will be a bundle of joy in their home. They
acknowledge that life comes from God and they could ask God in prayer for that special gift.
On Judith’s 45th birthday, the couple has more reasons to celebrate: Judith finds out that she is
pregnant. God blessed them with a child for their faithfulness. Judith and Benjie praised and thanked God.
They promised to take care of the life of the child God entrusted them.

us of this duty.

be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother,’ Raqa’, will be
answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says,’ You fool’, will be liable to fiery Gehenna.

Bl. Raphael Kolinowski
Even in the most difficult situation, God asks us to care for others and to
help protect their life. This was that Raphael Kalinowski, a Polish Discalced Carmelite friar,
did.
Joseph Kalinowski entered the Discalced Carmelite at Graz in Austria, and received
the religious name of Brother Raphael of Saint Joseph. He became priest in 1882. He was
always ready to help all those in need. He spent most of his time hearing confessions and
served his religious brothers and sisters with fervent love and sacrifice.
When the Polish revolted against their Russian oppressors, Raphael was imprisoned
when he resigned from his post as a military in the Russian forces and accepted the post as
minister of war at the region of Vilna, in the rebel army. While in prison, he showed courage,
patience, and love for his fellow prisoners. He taught them how to pray and helped them be
peaceful and hopeful. He also gave them material help together with a word of
encouragement.
His life came to an end on 5th November1907, at Wadowice, in the monastery
founded by himself. During his life and even death, he was known as a holy man known
throughout the nation.

God created man and woman to care for each other. He wants them to love and serve each other and
be pure and not commit unfaithfulness.
You have heard that it was said, “ You shall not commit adultery.” But I say to you, But I
say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
If your right eye cause you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your
members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. And if your right hands causes you to sin, cut
it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go
into Gehenna.

We Celebrate God’s Message
Stanislaus Kubistawas attracted to the kind of life that missionaries led even when he was still a
young boy. When he entered the seminary, his formators notice that he is gentle, modest, faithful and
serene, ever ready for any sacrifice.
Stanislaus knew the importance of modern communications for the continued spread of God’s word,
that is why, after his ordination he published newspapers for the Society of the Divine Word (SVD).
Thanks to his efforts the SVD in Poland became more and more involved in the press apostolate. He was
quite influential in bringing missionary concerns to the general public.
When the German Army occupied Poland in 1939, the press was dismantled and all the papers
confiscated. All the members of SVD were arrested. On February 5, 1940, they were taken to the
concentration camp in Gdansk. Two months later, the prisoners were taken in cattle trucks to a prison near
Berlin. Fr. Kubista died at that camp on April 26 in OrienburgSachsenhausen. An eyewitness reported that
even in most difficult circumstances exhibited gentleness, modesty, serenity, and concern for others.
Blessed Stanislaus Kubista was beatified by Pope John Paul II on June 13, 1999, together with three
companion from the Society of the Divine Word as part of a group of 107 Polish martyrs of the Second
World War.

Read how Alma resisted temptation.
Honest Alma
Alma was born from a poor family but despite their financial struggles her parents were able to send
her to a reputable school. During the third quarter, a project in Home Economics requires materials to be
bought. Unfortunately, Alma’s parents could not buy them for her because her brother was sick. She
begged and cried. She knew that without the project she would not be an academic awardee. But she
understands their situation very well.
One day, after their P.E. class, she saw a student from her batch leave the premises. The student left
a paper bag containing the materials for their Home Economics project. Alma was happy; it was like an
answered prayer. But she soon realized that it was wrong to get things that are not hers. She immediately
went to the principal’s office to return the lost bag.

Treasure in Heaven
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on the earth, where moth and decay destroy, and
thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys,
nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
Matthew 6:19-21
You shall not steal. And you shall not disere your neighbor’s house, his field, or his male
servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
Deuteronomy 5:19-21
We Celebrate Holiness
Our actions, no matter how simple, as long as they are honest, just and charitable, will make God
happy. This is the message of the life of St. Therese of Lisieux. Therese’s mother died when she was four
years old, and this made her suffer from a serious nervous disorder which she recovered in 1886 thanks to
what she later described as “the smile of the Virgin”
In 1887 she made a pilgrimage to Rome with her father and sister. She asked Leo XIII for
permission to enter Carmel of Lisieux, even though she was just fifteen years old. Her wish was granted a
year later.
Therese did not do anything extraordinary, in fact she performed the littlest things of daily life with
so much love. She offered everything that she did, no matter how simple or small, to God. She died in the
afternoon of September 30, 1897, uttering the simple words, “ My Lord, I love you!” Her trust was like that
of a child, entrusting herself to the hands of God, and inseparable from her strong, commitment to the true
love that is the full giving of oneself.

The Eighth Commandment gives a very important instruction about being honest. It is supported by
Jesus’ teaching about making false oaths.
“Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good
to the Lord all that you vow.’ But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor
by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Do not swear by
your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes’, and your ‘No’
mean ‘No’. Anything more is from the evil one.”
Being Truthful
Most people would like to be known for a very special characteristics or talent. Some would like to
be known for being pretty or handsome, while others would like to be known as a good dancer or singer.
The boy in the poem is known not only for his physical looks: he is with curly hair and pleasant eyes. At
the same time, he is described for not telling lies. This last characteristic of the boy is what made others
love him.
Telling the truth is something that comes easy for us because our God is the source of all truth and
goodness. Whenever we lie we become untrue to ourselves and most of all, to God. Lies cause division. It
is against the love of neighbor. If we lie we deceive ourselves and mislead others who have the right to the
truth.
The virtue that helps us tell the truth always is called truthfulness. This virtue gives us the power to be true
to ourselves, to others, and to God. To be true to ourselves means to accept what we can do and what we
cannot do. It means to accept the fact that without God, our Creator, and the help of others, we cannot do
anything.
