Most thunderstorms form in three stages: developing, mature, and dissipating. When warm, moist air rises it forms storm clouds. As the clouds grow, water droplets form and it starts to rain. As air cycles within the storm, electric charges build up causing lightning. Once downdrafts overpower updrafts, the storm weakens and dies out from the bottom up over about an hour.
