Sub soil exploration plays an important role in the design of the foundation of any
building and bridges. Before design the foundation for any civil Engineering
structure Sub-soil exploration is essentially required to study the character of the
Sub-soil strata as well as to determine the SBC of the foundation soil at different
depths. EXECUTION OF 2NOS. INDIVIDUAL RURAL PIPED WATER SUPPLY PROJECT PERTAINING
TO THUAMUL RAMPUR & KOKSARA BLOCK OF KALAHANDI DISTRICT INCLUDING 5YEARS O&M ON
EPC CONTRACT UNDER THE ONE PACKAGE ( KALAHANDI DIVISION) INCLUDING 5 YEARS OF O&M
ON EPC BASIS. LOCATION. PHUFGAON GP- PHUFGAON is decided to design the foundation
of the proposed structure on the basis of the Sub-soil exploration and accordingly
he entrusted the Sub-soil exploration work to VAWANI CONSTRUCTION & CONSULTANCY
SERVICES ,BALASORE with a direction to explore the Sub-soil at the proposed site.

GEOTECHNICAL FOUNDATION REPORT:
SERVICES , All the field and laboratory experiments have been carried out as per the
technical specification of the client and the relevant Indian Standard Code of
practice.
However the directions issued by Engineer-in charge in this respect has been
given due emphasis during the sub soil exploration work.

Our scope of services included the following tasks:
Boring of 1 n umbers of bore h ole (BH-1) of the propo sed depth b elow the
respective existing groun d level in orde r to know the sub surface stratification,
conducting necess ary fiel d tests and c ollection of s ub-strata sam ples for
laboratory testing.
Testing of soil samp les in th e labo ratory to determine i ts physical and
engineering properties and analyzing all field and la boratory dat a to evalua te
bearing capacity of the sub-strata for given foundation sizes.
Preparation of this report con taining ou r f indings and reco mmendations
including:
Brief description of the proposed project;
Description of the field exploration and laboratory testing programs;
Discussion of the site surface and subsurface conditions;
Preliminary geotechnical parameters for design of foundations, including the
allowable bearing capacity and estimated settlements with type and depth of
foundations for structural support.

METHODOLOGY OF INVESTIGATION
Wash Boring
By using Wash Boring/rotary dri lling rigs, the boreholes were progressed up
to required depth of boreholes. This method of boring is most widely used method
of advancing a boreholes. This method along with u se of drilling mud to stabilize
the side of t he borehole is likely to give the least disturbance to soils beneat h the
base o f the bore hole a nd permit t aking near to tru ly un disturbed s amples.
Diameter of boreholes w as 150 mm. Where caving of boreholes occurred, casings
were used to keep the boreholes stable.

Logging and Sample collection.
During explorat ion for each bore hole log of borin gs sh owing details about
the exploration were prepared.
Disturbed samples w ere colle cted from the sp lit spo on sa mpler afte r
conducting SPT. Th e samples were preserve d in transparent p olythene bags with
proper identification mark.
In case of undis turbed samples, tube s were sealed w ith wax at both th e
ends. Th en samplers were wrapped with moist ju te bags to preven t loss of
moisture.

LABORATORY TESTS
The laborator y-tests w ere co nducted on selected re presentative disturbed /
undisturbed soil samples collected from d ifferent Borehole drilled at the p roposed
site. The tests in clude G rain size analys is, Natura l m oisture con tent, D.F. S,
Specific Gravity an d Liqu id limit, Pl astic li mit, Plasticity i ndex, Shear test, and
Particles size distribution tests on repres entative soil . sample were also carried
out. All th e tests conducted conf irming to the requirements of I.S specification.
The results of all these tests have been annexed separately.

FOR ROCK STRATA
i. Core Recovery:
Rock core samples are kept in the same order as recovered from bore hole run
wise (marked arrow on cores in the increasing order of depth). The length of all
core samples is measured. Core recovery is the ratio of the sum of the lengths of
all the cores recovered from drilling per run.
Core Recovery (%) = (Total length of core pieces recovered/Length of run x 100 It
is expressed in percentage (%).
ii. RQD:
Rock Quality Designation indicates the quality of the rock. RQD is defined as the
ratio of the sum of the total length of the cores of length 10cm and longer
recovered from the drilling of the total length of the borehole is 1.5m.
RQD = (Total length of cores in pieces of 10cm length or longer/length of the run)
x 100 It is expressed in percentage (%).
iii. Unconfined compressive strength of rock specimens:
As soon as the rock core samples were received in the laboratory, Core Recovery
percentages and RQD percentages were determined. Then core samples which
were longer than the diameter that was 54mm were selected for preparation of
specific specimens as per IS: 9143-1979 in the ratio of length : diameter = 1:1
and correction factors applied ( since limited intact rock core sampling was
possible). Then the specimens were tested for unconfined compressive strength.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
This report describes the information obtained through geotechnical investigation carried
out for the “EXECUTION OF 2NOS. INDIVIDUAL RURAL PIPED WATER SUPPLY PROJECT
PERTAINING TO THUAMUL RAMPUR & KOKSARA BLOCK OF KALAHANDI DISTRICT INCLUDING
5YEARS O&M ON EPC CONTRACT UNDER THE ONE PACKAGE ( KALAHANDI DIVISION) INCLUDING
5 YEARS OF O&M ON EPC BASIS. LOCATION- PHUFGAON GP- PHUFGAON The data incorporated
has been obtained and processed using procedures specified in various codes of practices,
good engineering norms and conventions. The field / laboratory results and records reported
here are relevant for the test locations and time at which the tests have been conducted.
The following conclusions, suggestions and remarks are made basing on the available
test data and sub-soil profiles as per bore logs contained in the reports.
At this site, for geotechnical investigation 1 nos borehole was conducted.
The design soil parameters for borehole derived from the field testing as well as lab
testing works are presented in this report.
This is the general recommendation & not based on the knowledge of structural details
for proposed structures. So designer may change the recommendation & he may decide the
depth of the foundation and type of foundation of the structure as per the structural details.
The test reports & suggestions contained in this report are based on the engineering
characteristics of the sub-soil of the test locations and shall vary in cases of varied
characteristics of soil.
