METHODOLOGY OF INVESTIGATION

Wash Boring
By using Wash Boring/rotary dri lling rigs, the boreholes were progressed up
to required depth of boreholes. This method of boring is most widely used method
of advancing a boreholes. This method along with u se of drilling mud to stabilize
the side of t he borehole is likely to give the least disturbance to soils beneat h the
base o f the bore hole a nd permit t aking near to tru ly un disturbed s amples.
Diameter of boreholes w as 150 mm. Where caving of boreholes occurred, casings
were used to keep the boreholes stable.

Standard Pe netration Test s (S PTs) were conducted in t he bo reholes

alternate to UDS. By connecting a split spoon sampler to ‘A’ rods and driving it by
45 cm u sing a 6 3.5 kg hammer fal ling freely from a hei ght of 75 cm. The tests
were conducted in accordance with IS: 2131-1981(Reaffirmed 1987).
Number of blo ws required for each 15 cm penetration of the split spoon
sampler was recorded. First 15 cm p enetration is ign ored. The cumulative no. of
blows required to penet rate the rest 30 cm of th e 4 5 cm s ampling in terval is
reported as the SPT value (N value).
For collection of un-disturbed sample thin wall samplers have been used. In
order to reduce wa ll fric tion, su itable precaution s suc h a s oiling the surface shall
be taken.
Bore logs showing field data of each borehole has been attached to this report.
Ground water
After completion o f d rilling and s ampling ground water l evel was measured
in the borehole. In BH-1 the ground water level wa s found average 5.00 m de pth
within the drilling depth below the existing ground level.

Logging and Sample collection.

During explorat ion for each bore hole log of borin gs sh owing details about
the exploration were prepared.
Disturbed samples w ere colle cted from the sp lit spo on sa mpler afte r
conducting SPT. Th e samples were preserve d in transparent p olythene bags with
proper identification mark.
In case of undis turbed samples, tube s were sealed w ith wax at both th e
ends. Th en samplers were wrapped with moist ju te bags to preven t loss of
moisture.

FOR ROCK STRATA

i. Core Recovery:
Rock core samples are kept in the same order as recovered from bore hole run
wise (marked arrow on cores in the increasing order of depth). The length of all
core samples is measured. Core recovery is the ratio of the sum of the lengths of
all the cores recovered from drilling per run.
Core Recovery (%) = (Total length of core pieces recovered/Length of run x 100 It
is expressed in percentage (%).
ii. RQD:

Rock Quality Designation indicates the quality of the rock. RQD is defined as the
ratio of the sum of the total length of the cores of length 10cm and longer
recovered from the drilling of the total length of the borehole is 1.5m.
RQD = (Total length of cores in pieces of 10cm length or longer/length of the run)
x 100 It is expressed in percentage (%).
iii. Unconfined compressive strength of rock specimens:
As soon as the rock core samples were received in the laboratory, Core Recovery
percentages and RQD percentages were determined. Then core samples which
were longer than the diameter that was 54mm were selected for preparation of
specific specimens as per IS: 9143-1979 in the ratio of length : diameter = 1:1
and correction factors applied ( since limited intact rock core sampling was
possible). Then the specimens were tested for unconfined compressive strength.
