SENTENCE DIAGRAMMING
There are different types of sentence diagramming. Some of the most common types are Reed-Kellogg
Diagram and Syntactic Tree Diagram.
1. Reed-Kellogg Diagram
This uses horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and dotted lines to show the parts of speech, phrases, and
clauses in a sentence.
Syntax Nodes:
S - sentence Adj - adjective
NP - noun phrase V - verb
VP - verb phrase Adv - adverb
Det - determiner PP - prepositional phrase
N - noun P - preposition
Pro - pronoun
Now, let us analyze the phrase structure and make a tree diagram using the following sentences.
Step 1: Set down the basic pair of branches the subject (NP) and the predicate (VP).
Step 2: Label the syntactic category (parts of speech) of each word that make up the sentence. In the
example below, the VP consists of a V and NP.
NP
Bea bought many snacks.
N V Det N
Step 3: Under NP, identify the noun (N). If there is a determiner then you should make another branch. If a
pronoun is used as a subject, label it as Pro.
Step 4: Under VP, label the V and NP. In case PP and Adv are present, both would fall under VP.
NP PP
Bea bought many delicious snacks at the market yesterday.
N V Det Adj N P Det N Adv

Step 5: Connect the remaining words to the constituents (subject, predicate, or phrase) or nodes they
belong to.
