protection.
Data protection software and appliance technology developer Arcserve is during long-term recovery
from a human error that resulted in an as-of-yet-unknown number of end-user clients from the
company’s StorageCraft business losing their backup data.
The error happened when the company moved the StorageCraft backend operations from an internal
data center to the Google Cloud Platform to add resilience to the system.
While the data loss does not impact primary data, it leaves clients’ primary data at risk because it may
not be backed up. Arcserve is in the process of remediating the issue with its StorageCraft MSPs,
including looking at how to reseed the backups and ensure previously protected data is protected again.
Prompt: Using the scopes of cyber protection, what would you have done to prevent StorageCraft’s
backup data loss?
1. Safety:
To prevent StorageCraft’s backup data loss, I will make sure that there will always be an
available reliable copy of the data and information in StorageCraft. By doing so, time will not
be wasted in restoring and recovering the data that has been a loss. A reliable copy will
serve as the backup when the original copy gets corrupted or leaked, thus, preparing and
providing a reliable copy is a must.
2. Accessibility:
Aside from making sure that I will have a backup copy of data that has been lost, I will also
ensure that the data and information stored in the system will be available from anywhere
and anytime. I will also store copies of valuable data and information that’s in StorageCraft
in various mediums. I will also make sure that the stored valuable data and information will
still be available and accessible when the original copy gets corrupted or compromised.
3. Privacy:
I will make sure that the people who will be able and can access the data and information
stored in the StorageCraft will be the authorized personnel only by making the system ask
for their access pin and identity and match them to the data of the authorized people
recorded in the system. I will also make sure that the only one who has full control of the
system will be the owner. I will also make sure that every login and logout entry in the
system will be listed and will not be deleted or modified so that I will be able to monitor the
people who accessed and view the files stored within the StorageCraft, thus, preventing any
insider attacks.
4. Authenticity:
For the sake of authenticity, I will make sure that the data in the backup copy is a hundred
percent match to the data in the original copy. I will make sure that the data in the backup
copy is exact and unmodified. By doing so, forwarding, or disseminating wrong information
through different networks will be avoided and I will be able to prevent jeopardizing the
whole operation.
5. Security:
To ensure the security of the data in the StorageCraft and the backup data, I will make sure
that the security system of the StorageCraft and the backup data is always checked and
improved. I will also make sure that the main system will not connect to other systems that
pose danger to itself and its security system. I will also install antivirus software to the
system of StorageCraft to prevent any cyber-attacks and malware from entering the main
system and affecting the files stored in StorageCraft and the backup system.
