When you’re introducing yourself you might use different kinds of greetings and responses:

-Hello -glad to meet you.

Names and occupations:

Grammar: verb be: singular statements/ contractions

Articles: are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. They are a type of adjective

The commun articles are:

1. The
2. A
3. An

When we use them:

- The: is used before a noun to indicate the identity of the noun.


- An: is used before words that start with vowel sounds, even if the word starts with a
silent consonant ( ex: “an equation”; “an hour”)
- A: is used before words that start with consonant sounds even if the consonant sound
is made by a vowel (ex: “a model”; “a unit”.)

Affirmative statements & contractions

-A contraction is a word made by shortening and combining two words.

 I am David. / I’m David.


 You are an architect. / you’re an architect.
 He is a teacher. / he’s a teacher.
 She is a singer. / she’s a singer.

Negative statements & contractions

 I am not David. / I’m not David.


 You are not an artist. / you’re not an artist/ you aren’t a artist.
 He is not a student. / he’s not a student
 She is not a banker./ she’s not a banker/ she isn’t a banker.

Grammar practice: write the correct article:
