1. Planning Information

A. Effectivity
PW307A Engines which are before and include Serial No. PCE-CH0931.
PW307B Engines which are before and include Serial No. PCE-CL0002.
PW307D Engines which are before and include Serial No. PCE-CM0317.

B. Concurrent Requirements

None.

C. Reason

(1) Problem

The intermediate case assembly corrosion protection at the Inlet Guide Vane (IGV)
interface is not optimal, and the bolts that clamp the upper towershaft bearing
and oil shield to the case may loosen.

(2) Cause

Insufficient corrosion protection coating at the IGV interface.

Bolt torque preload relaxation due to creep strain which is caused by the high
temperature around the baffle.

(3) Solution

Replace the intermediate case assembly with one that has:

v a case with optimized corrosion protection at the IGV interface;
v longer bolts and inserts to increase the bolt thread shear area;
v a redesigned case to accommodate the longer inserts; and
v implement a new torquing procedure to ensure the preload applied to each bolt is
independent of the rundown torque.

D. Description

Replace the intermediate case with a new or modified one.

E. Compliance

CATEGORY 6 - P&WC recommends to do this service bulletin when the subassembly

(i.e. module, accessories, components, or build groups) is disassembled
and access is available to the necessary part. Do all spare
subassemblies.

CAUTION: THE INTERMEDIATE CASE MUST BE REJECTED IF ANY DAMAGE

THAT IS FOUND IS NOT WITHIN THE SPECIFIED LIMITS IN THE CIR.
(1) Clean the intermediate case, do a visual inspection and if required, do any repairs.
Refer to the CIR manual for instructions.

(2) Apply masking to all surfaces outside of Area F, Area G and Area H per SPOP 36
(Ref. SPM, Task 70-44-01-330-008).

(3) Remove the araldite and aluminized-epoxy enamel coating from the part per SPOP
260 (Ref. SPM, Task 70-21-00-110-042).

(4) Remove the four old inserts P/N NAS1130-3L25 at Location E.

(5) Apply masking on all openings in the intermediate case not required for the
machining of the case.

(6) Re-machine the four holes at Location E according to the new dimension required
on Sect B-B.

(7) Machine two new holes at Location J, according to the dimensions required on
Section C-C and Section D-D.

(8) Do an inspection of the machined areas for cracks per SPOP 62 (Ref. SPM, Task
70-33-00-230-001).

(9) Apply surface treatment to the four holes at Location E, and the two holes at
Location J as follows:

(a) Apply Chromate Solution (PWC11-019 ) on the bare metal surfaces of the six
holes per SPOP 41 (Ref. SPM, Task 70-44-01-330-011) with an overlap of 1/8
in. (3 mm) minimum on the adjacent Surfaces. Apply one coat of Araldite
coating per SPOP 173 (Ref. SPM, Task 70-41-03-380-018).

(10) Apply Araldite coating on areas specified in Fig. 1 per SPOP 173 (Ref. Task
70-41-03-380-018).

NOTE: 1. The chromate solution on the bare metal surfaces per SPOP 41 (Ref.
SPM, Task 70-44-01-330-011) is included in SPOP 173 (Ref. SPM, Task
70-41-03-380-018).

NOTE: 2. The necessary quantity of coats are given on the Fig. 1. Overspray
beyond Area F and G is not permitted.

NOTE: 3. Do the pressure flush procedure specified in SPOP 173 only after the
paint has been applied.

(11) Apply primer and aluminized-epoxy enamel coating on areas specified in Figure 1
per SPOP 155 (Task 70-41-03-380-011).

NOTE: 1. Refer to the External Surface Only part of SPOP 155.

NOTE: 2. It is not necessary to apply chromate per SPOP 41 as specified in SPOP

155 because it is included in SPOP 173 (Ref. SPM, Task 70-41-03-380-
018).

NOTE: 3. The necessary quantity of coats are given on the (Fig. 1).

(12) Do the pressure flush procedure specified in SPOP 173.

(13) Install the new inserts P/N NAS1130-3L30 at Location E, as required on Section
C-C and Section D-D.

(14) Reidentify the intermediate case as follows (Ref. Fig. 1 Sheet 2):

WARNING: USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN YOU WRITE WITH THE VIBRATION
PEENING PROCEDURE.
(a) Put a line across the old part number. Use the vibration peening procedure,
0.003 to 0.006 in. (0.08-0.15 mm) deep, and write the new part number in the
same area.

(b) Apply a surface treatment on the vibropeened area with two or three coats of
clear enamel (Araldite) (PWC07-038) (Ref. (Ref. CIR Task 72-33-50-380-801-A
- Local Protective Coating Repair) Task 72-33-50-380-801-A - Local Protective
Coating Repair).

C. Install the new or modified parts in the New P/N list in Para. 2.C., Material Information,
in accordance with the overhaul manual instructions and the revised assembly
instructions in Fit. No. 1758 (Ref. Table 1) as follows:
v Ref. OHM Ref. 72-32-01, INTERMEDIATE CASE - ASSEMBLY-01, Task
72-32-01-440-801.
v Ref. OHM Ref. 72-00-00, ASSEMBLY-00, Task 72-00-00-400-802.

D. Record the accomplishment of P&WC S.B. No. 47252 in the applicable engine log book.
E. Please complete the ‘‘SB Incorporation Sheet’’ (Ref. Fig. 4) and send by E-mail
shown on the form.

1758 A. Apply a light coat of antiseize compound (PWC06-004) to
the threads and faces of the bolts.

B. Check and record the maximum installation torque for each

bolt (lbf.in./Nm).

NOTE: The maximum installation torque value is specified as the

highest torque reading measured during the installation, after
the bolt touches and turns one full turn through the
anti-rotation part of the helical coil. (Do not loosen or remove
the bolt before you apply the final torque).

C. Required preload is equal to 23 to 26 lbf.in. (2.60-2.94 Nm).

D. Calculate and record the final torque value for each bolt.

NOTE: The final torque value is determined by adding the preload

torque value to the maximum installation torque.

E. Tighten the bolt to the recorded final torque value. The final
torque value must not be more than 40 lbf.in. (4.52 Nm).
