New GVU IP Converter Calibration

This document provides instructions for calibrating the GVU I/P converter for a Wärtsilä 50DF engine. The calibration is done in two parts - first with the engine stopped to set the zero and span points, then verified with the engine running in gas mode. The calibration ensures the main gas pressure and its reference value are accurately controlled. Fine tuning may be needed using monitoring software to compare the pressure trends. Adjusting the bleed valve can optimize the regulating valve response at engine start.

GVU I/P converter calibration

GVU I/P converter calibration basic knowledge (Refer to the DBAA441205)

1. Since the control of the gas regulating unit is an open loop-type (does not controlled
PID method such as feed-forward or feed-back), it is important that the I/P converter of
the GVU is correctly calibrated. If the main gas pressure PT901 and its reference CV901
(MCC line) differ more than 0.1 bar during operation with gas mode, a calibration is
needed.

2. Present the gas pressure regulating unit is controlled by a 4 ~ 20mA current, which
corresponds to a gas pressure of 0 ~ 4bar. In old installations the scaling may also be
0 ~ 6bar or 0 ~ 8bar.

3. The calibration is should be performed by using WECSplorer, by changing parameter

MFI pressure ref. stop [mbar], depending on which gas line is to be calibrated.
Because of pressure losses in the main gas piping from the GVU to the engine, slightly
higher valves are used for the calibration of the MCC line.

4. The calibration procedure consists of two parts, the first part is a calibration with the
engine stopped and the second is a verification part with the engine running in gas
mode.

Calibration of MCC line in engine stop mode

¾ The engine must be in stop mode during the calibration procedure.

¾ Connect WECSplorer to the engine.

¾ Should be confirm analogue scaling of CV901 before calibration.

GVU I/P converter calibration

Calibration of MCC line in engine stop mode

1. Set the MFI pressure ref, stop [mbar] value to 1000.

2. Adjust the zero adjustment screw (Z ) on the I/P converter until the pressure reading
on the regulated control air pressure gauge (pneumatic reference) on the GVU shows
1.1 bar (includes a 0.1 bar compensation for losses in piping at low engine load).
This step may be skipped as the reading, step 3 is more important.

3. Create a gas flow by opening the manual ventilation ball valve slightly and verify that
the pressure is 1.1 bar after the regulator as well. If needed, correct with the zero
adjustment screw (Z) on the I/P converter. Close the manual ventilation ball valve.

4. Set the MFI pressure ref, stop [mbar] value to 3000.

5. Adjust the span adjustment screw (S ) on the I/P converter until the pressure reading
on the regulated control air pressure gauge (pneumatic reference) on the GVU shows
3.2 bar (includes a 0.2 bar compensation for losses in piping at high engine load).
This step may be skipped as the reading, step 6 is more important.

6. Create a gas flow by opening the manual ventilation ball valve slightly and verify that
the pressure is 3.2 bar after the regulator as well. If needed, correct with the span
adjustment screw (S) on the I/P converter. Close the manual ventilation ball valve.
Repeat steps 1 ~ 6 until no more calibration is needed.

Note! Verify 0.5 bar and 0 bar

Verification in engine running (gas mode)

After the previous calibration is performed, verify that it is correct by performing the
following test on a running engine. The test may also be performed as a general check-up
on the gas regulating system.

1. Connect WECSplorer to the engine and start a trend including gas pressure and
references (CV901, PT901 and the load UTY793)

2. Start the engine in gas mode and ramp up to full load ( > 90% engine load)

3. If CV901 and PT901 trends are not following each other, carefully adjust the span
adjustment screw (S) while observing the trends (see the red arrow in Figure 1)

Warning ! Do not make any sudden and big adjustments to the (S) screw.

Note ! When fine tuning the S screw, open CV901 and PT901 using the To monitor
window function in WECSplorer, and enlarge them so that they are clearly
visible while the fine tuning is performed. See Figure 2 for a screenshot.

Adjustment of regulating valve response

If the main gas pressure exceeds 1 bar at engine start, adjust the response speed faster
(outwards adjustment) by using the bleed valve adjustment screw.
The bleed valve adjustment screw default setting is 85 % outwards.

The engine should be stopped when adjusting the bleed valve.
