Functions of School Library:

The school library serves a variety of functions that are essential for the academic
success and intellectual growth of students. Here are some of the primary functions of a
school library:
 

1. It provides suitable documents and information helpful in the school’s educational


programs and extracurricular activities.
2. It makes available textbooks and other additional reading material for all subjects as per
the requirement of teachers and students.
3. It procures handy documents and illustrated picture books with bold and large fonts to
create children’s interest in reading.
4. It procures the latest teaching-learning material in the form of books, CDs, audio-visual,
etc., to improve the teaching skills of teachers.
5. It keeps reference books, dictionaries, yearbooks, directories, encyclopedias, travel
books, etc., so that students and teachers can get help from these other than textbooks.
6. It also keeps some books on easy self-learning, like using a computer to develop student
learning skills.
7. It makes biographies, autobiographies of freedom fighters, and other national and
international personalities available to develop respect and love for the nation and
humanity.
8. It provides books of simple and meaningful stories of classics, animals, and birds to give
moral values and ethics to children.
9. It also procures bulletins, journals, etc., on different subjects and various aspects of
education to keep teachers and school management updated in their respective areas.

• To propose library vision, strategy document

• To formulate various policies related to library like, purchase, space etc.

• To propose library budget for the Institutes and department

• To propose library activities, programmers and services

• To propose library and information literacy in the institute

• Implementing Library policies – Library Material Purchase Policy, Book Bank Policy, Electronic Resource
Access Policy.

• To provide for proper documentation services and updating the Library collection.

• To work towards modernization and improvement of Library and documentation Services

• To formulate policies and procedures for efficient use of Library resources.

• To review Library readership dept-wise.

• To adopt measures to enhance readership

• To seek feedback on Library functions from readers.

• To submit the annual report on the functioning of the library
