Q3 - Independent and Dependent Event - DLP

This document provides information about a 10th grade mathematics lesson on independent and dependent events taught by Teacher Angela Mae Lumines. The objectives are for students to illustrate, differentiate, and solve problems involving independent and dependent events. Examples are provided to discuss the key concepts. In one example, the probability of rolling a 6 on a die and getting tails on a coin toss are calculated to show these are independent events. In another dependent example, the probability of selecting a boy first and then a girl from a class is found.

B. Establishing a purpose for the

lesson Activity 1:
Direction; State whether the result of the first event affects the result of
the second event.

1. Studying hard, getting a high grade.

- The result of one event affects the probability of the second
event. When you study hard, then you will get a high grade.
2. Eating a lot, gaining weight.
- Eating a lot will affect your body which will gain weight.
3. Attending a singing lesson, raining today.
- Attending singing lesson does not affect the probability of
raining or not.
4. Tossing a coin, rolling a die and getting a 6.
- Tossing a coin does not affect rolling a die.
When a first event affects the probability of a second event, the events
are said to be dependent, while when the first event does not affect the
probability of the second, the events are independent.

Independent Events
Two events are independent if the occurrence of one of the
events gives us no information about whether or not the other event will
occur; that is, the events have no influence on each other.
If event A and B are independent, then the product of the
probability of A and the probability of B. in symbols,
P ( A∧B )=P ( A ) • P ( B )
C. Presenting examples/instances
of the new lesson
Dependent Events
Two events are dependent if the occurrence of one event
does affect the occurrence of the other (e.g., random selection
without replacement).
If A and B are dependent, then the probability of both
events occurring is the product of the probability of A and the
probability of B after A occurs. In symbols,
P ( A∧B )=P ( A ) • P ( B after A )

D. Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills #1 Example.
1. A die and a coin are tossed. What is the probability of getting a
6 and a tail?

Sample space = {1H, 2H, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 1T, 2T, 3T, 4T, 5T,
6T}

Let A be the event that the die comes up 6. A = {6H, 6T}

Let B be the event that the coin land tails. B = {1T, 2T, 3T,
4T, 5T, 6T}

The events are Independent, since the event rolling a die does
not affect the event tossing a coin.

2. A class is composed of 10 boys and 15 girls. If two presenters
to a poem recital are to be chosen in succession, what is the
probability that the first is a boy and the second is a girl?

n(sample space) = 25

The events are dependent because a student cannot be chosen

E. Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills #2 Group activity 1.
Direction: Determine whether the events are independent or
dependent. Then find the probability.

1. A toy box contains 12 toys, 8 stuffed animals, and 3 board games.

Maria randomly chooses 2 toys for the child she is babysitting to play
with. What is the probability that she chose 2 stuffed animals as the first
two choices?

2. A basket contains 6 apples, 5 bananas, 4 oranges, and 5 guavas.

Dominic randomly chooses one piece of fruit, eats it, and chooses
another piece of fruit. What is the probability that he chose a banana
and then an apple?

3. Nick has 4 black pens, 3 blue pens, and 2 red pens in his school bag.
Nick randomly picks two pens out of his school bag. What is the
probability that Nick chose two blue pens, if he replaced the first pen
back in his pocket before choosing a second pen?

4. A bag of jelly beans contains 10 red, 6 green, 7 yellow, and 5 orange

jelly beans. What is the probability of randomly choosing a red jelly
bean, replacing it, and then randomly choosing an orange jelly bean?

5. Rene and Cris went to a grocery store to buy drinks. They choose
from 10 different brands of juice drinks, 6 different brands of carbonated
drinks, and 3 different brands of mineral water. What is the probability
that Rene and Cris both choose juice drinks, if Rene randomly chose
first and liked the first brand he picked up?

Seatwork
Direction: Determine if the following is dependent or independent.

1. Choosing another candy out of 10, after eating the first one.
Dependent.
F. Developing mastery (Leads to 2. Picking two balls from different jars. Independent
3. Drawing a deck of cards, returning it, and drawing another card.
formative assessment 3) Independent
4. Electing the president of the 25 students first, then the vice
president. Dependent
5. Rolling 5 on a die and drawing a red card from the deck of
cards. Independent

G. Finding practical applications of Describe a situation in your life that involves dependent and
concepts and skills in daily living independent events. Explain why the event are dependent and
independent.
