7. COMPRESSOR CAUTIONS
In order to safely and properly use the compressor, please observe the following
recommendations.

Rubber plug Compressor is charged with 0.05 ÷ 0.08 MPa-g (gauge pressure) dry
nitrogen, remove high pressure side (discharge tube side) rubber plug
before application, otherwise refrigerant oil will gush from the compressor.

Welding Take care that the foreign matter such as solder, dust, etc. will not get
into the refrigerating unit from soldering/welding joints between
compressor and piping, as well as between piping.
When welding the compressor discharge tube and system piping, the
upper of the compressor soundproof cover should have the protection to
prevent the welding flame ablating the cotton under the soundproof cover.

Vacuum The compressor must not be vacuumed and operated by itself. The
requirement evacuation of the system shall ensure that the vacuum is below 20 Pa-g.

Refrigerant Use the specified refrigerant for the compressor: R290 (Propane).

Refrigerant Refrigerant should be charged from the end of the condenser in the
charge refrigerating unit. Never charge refrigerant to the compressor directly.

Starting or Make sure that wiring is correct before starting the compressor. The
running duration between two start-ups must exceed three minutes. It is forbidden
to run compressor in reverse direction and in the air.

Impurities Keep the system clean during assembly, the filter must be assembled in
the refrigerant circuit to prevent blocking the capillary tube etc.

Refrigerant oil Do not reduce or increase the refrigerant oil during application as the
compressor has been charged with the specified amount of oil.

Oil return from To ensure the oil inside the refrigerating system returns to compressor,
the system when designing the piping, the minimum gas velocity is 4m/s for
horizontal pipe, and is 7m/s for vertical pipe.

Refrigerant To prevent liquid refrigerant accumulation in the compressor, ensure that

accumulation the temperature at the bottom of compressor case is 5°C higher than the
condensing temperature.

Installation The compressor shall operate properly with tilting angle below 5°.
requirement

Storage Do not put the compressor horizontally or put it upside down. Do not drop
the compressor. Do not put the compressor in the open air. Store the
compressor inside rooms where the temperature is inside the range
between -10 ÷ +65°C.

Other The compressor should not be splashed with water inside.

The compressor should not be left open in the atmosphere for more than
15 minutes.
The electrical pulse should not be applied to the hermetic terminals when
the compressor is under vacuum.
Temperature in the system during steady compressor operation should not
be less than -35 °C to prevent the wax in the oil from precipitating.

Wiring Wire according to compressor specifications (wiring diagram).
Do not connect the compressor directly to the AC power supply.
Incorrect wiring can cause reverse rotation and compressor faults.

8. R290 (PROPANE) COMPRESSOR WARNINGS
The R290 (Propane) refrigerant is a flammable gas.

When you sell the refrigerating unit with flammable refrigerant to consumers, we recognize the
accident resulting from the flammable refrigerant problem (such as homing or explosion) must
not be occurred, regardless of the combustibility of refrigerant.

You are strongly requested to take preventive measures for safety.

We mention the minimum requirements for safety which we think of, as the supplier of the
compressor. Please add the measures for consumers' safety if they are not enough.

1. The hazards involved with the flammable refrigerant are as below.

Expected cause of hazard

Hazard
(It will be caused when every factor below occurs at the same time)
Compressor explosion  Compressor inhales much air(1),
 Malfunction of low pressure protection,
 Unawareness of low volume of refrigerant.
Static Pressure  Uncontrollable high pressure,
Destruction  Malfunction of high pressure protection,
 Malfunction of thermal protection,
 Impossibility of overcurrent protection.
Glass terminal break  Overcurrent (ex. layer short),
 Malfunction of overcurrent protection inside of refrigerating
unit(2),
 Malfunction of overcurrent protection outside of refrigerating
unit.
Combustion of the leaked  Refrigerant leakage inside the refrigerating unit,
refrigerant (inside the  Reaching flammable density,
refrigerating unit)  Existing the origin of fire(3).
Combustion of the leaked  Refrigerant leakage outside the refrigerating unit,
refrigerant (outside the  Reaching flammable density(4),
refrigerating unit)  Existing the origin of fire(5).
(1)
Need to be careful especially when manufactures rework at the production or at the
maintenance service as well as in the normal operation.
(2)
It is supposed that in some cases, the protection will not work as quick as glass
terminal dissolution.
(3)
The looseness of wiring at the terminal of refrigerating unit or compressor can make a
spark.
(4)
Remaining refrigerant is expected if the refrigerating unit is installed in the basement or
surrounded veranda.
(5)
Static electricity can be the cause of ignition, (assumed inside the refrigerating unit
also)

2. Besides the generic instructions listed in Operating Instruction, follow the instructions as
below in order to minimize the risk of hazards involved with flammable gas.

Measures against the

Hazard Requirements
source of hazard
General Basically, follow the description of IEC-60335-2-xx
related to the specific refrigerating unit.
1. Compressor 1. Prevention To prevent the break of compressor piping, the
explosion against the mixed piping must not be over its stress limit as referred in
the air into operating instruction. Also check the stress capacity
compressor of refrigerating unit piping and take the appropriate
measure to prevent the break of piping.

2. Protection Stop the refrigerating unit operation in case that the
against the low low side pressure becomes negative pressure.
pressure
3. Protection When the refrigerant gas in the refrigerating unit is
against the low gas remarkably little (less than the half of normal), take
volume the measures to stop the refrigerating unit.
In case it is difficult to take this measurement, low
pressure protection should be doubled.
2. Explosion 1. Protection Stop operation of the refrigerating unit before
due to high against the high discharge pressure reaches the 110% of Air tight test
pressure pressure pressure value.
2. Protection Stop operation of the refrigerating unit in case the
against the compressor input current is larger than 110% of max
abnormal operation operating current for more than one minute.
of compressor In case if it is difficult, high pressure protection
Note 1 should be doubled.
3. Protection in case Secondary damage due to the compressor explosion
of fire can be assumed when the fire happens and the
temperature of refrigerating unit rises. At least one
part of the refrigerating unit piping had better
designed that can be destroyed by lower pressure
than compressor destruction pressure as to be
destroyed before compressor bursts when the fire
happens
3. Glass 1. Protection Equip a current fuse on the main circuit of
terminal break overcurrent of refrigerating unit or a short circuit breaker to protect
refrigerating unit over current.
side Thermal relay is better to prevent from malfunction
Note 1 (short circuit) of the relay itself.
4. Combustion 1. Prevention Same as 1.1.
of leaked against the
refrigerant refrigerant leakage
2. Prevention  Inside the refrigerating unit:
against the remain Design refrigerating unit that refrigerant will not
of refrigerant at the reach its flammable density when refrigerant leaks.
point of ignition  Outside the refrigerating unit:
Alert the consumers, installers or servicemen that the
refrigerating unit must not be fixed in the closed
basement or surrounded veranda to prevent
refrigerant from reaching its flammable outside the
refrigerating unit.
3. Exclusion of the  Inside the refrigerating unit:
cause of ignition Be careful of the wiring to the terminal of compressor
not to cause its spark due to the looseness of wiring.
Crank case heater must not be the ignition source.
 Outside the refrigerating unit:
Alert the consumers, installers, or servicemen that
the cause of ignition (such as cigarette) should not be
brought near the refrigerating unit.

Note 1: This protection is assured by suitable Carel drives.

3. Take proper measure and warn the consumer not to take off the protection system of the
refrigerating unit.
Take some measures that consumers cannot operate the refrigerating unit by resetting the
protection system when the refrigerating unit stops its operation due to a trouble related to
refrigerating unit safety.
