Bio q2 Week 4

This document provides an overview of the key topics to be covered in a biology class about cellular respiration. It outlines three major learning competencies: 1) distinguishing the major features of glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, electron transport system, and chemiosmosis; 2) describing reactions that produce and consume ATP; and 3) describing the role of oxygen in respiration and pathways of electron flow without oxygen. Links are then provided for students to learn more about each stage of cellular respiration. The document concludes with activities for students to complete to reinforce their understanding of cellular respiration.

The energy required to power living cells comes from the sun. Plants capture this energy and convert it to
organic molecules. Animals in turn, can gain this energy by eating plants or other animals. The energy that
powers our cell s is obtained from the food we eat. The most efficient way for cells to harvest energy stored in
food is through cellular respiration. Glucose, derived from food, is broken down during cellular respiration to
provide energy in the form of ATP and heat. Cellular respiration occurs in the cells of all living things, both
autotrophs and heterotrophs. All of them burn glucose to form ATP. The reactions of cellular respiration can be
grouped into three stages: glycolysis, the citric acid cycle or Krebs cycle, and electron transport.

For the following major features of glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport system and chemiosmosis please
