Before starting our lesson, we will have a short

activity, I know you are already familiar with the
GO, GROW, AND GLOW classification of foods. I
will be showing pictures of different types of
foods, what will you do is Identify if its Go, grow,

Do you eat the foods I have shown?

Yes Ma’am
Are all the foods I have shown important for you
to eat to have a healthy body ?
Yes Ma’am
Why?

Because our body needs

different types of nutrients or
compunds for us to grow
What do you call the compounds that is healthy and avoid being sick.
essential to your life ?
Ma’am its Biomolecules
II. ENGAGE

Now I will show you a video clip about

biomolecules, I want you to take down notes and
practice your listening skills. After watching the
video I want you to answer the following
questions.

1.What are the different types of biomolecules?

2. What is a Monomer?
3. What are examples of foods rich in
carbohydrates?
4. What are example of Lipids?
5. What are the major elements in the
biomolecules?

III. EXPLORE

For you to be able to differentiate the different

biomolecules, let’s do the following activities.

Activity 2: “Building up the Biomolecule Family”

Directions: Using the given notes on the different
classifications of biomolecules, accomplish the
given table
with the necessary information needed.

V. ELABORATE

Biomolecules are important for the functioning of

living
organisms. Several macromolecules (protein,
carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and enzymes) and
small
molecules (amino acids, vitamins, fatty acids,
neurotransmitters, and hormones) fall under the
category
of biomolecules. These molecules perform or
trigger
important biochemical reactions in living
organisms.

non-living
molecules are the actual foot-soldiers of the
battle of
sustenance of life. They range from small
molecules such
as primary and secondary metabolites and
hormones to
large macromolecules like proteins, nucleic

carbohydrates, lipids etc. All living organisms

several compounds to continue to live. All of
these
biomolecules are organic, which means that they
contain
carbon. Carbon has four valence electrons,
which means
this element forms strong covalent bonds with

other elements.

 Biomolecules come from the Greek word exercise regularly.
Ancient Greek βίος (bíos, meaning “life”)

living organisms. As such, most of them
are organic molecules. The four major
groups of biomolecules
include polysaccharides, proteins, nucleic
acids (DNA and RNA), and lipids.

Functions:

1. Carbohydrates- energy source for a cell and

provides structural support for plant cell.

2.Proteins-speeds up chemical reactions,

transport molecules and build and repair cells.
Enzymes, structure, recognition, transport
pigments, signals, movement.

3.Lipids-Cell membrane structure for a long term

energy storage, signals cellular metabolism

4. Nucleic Acid-hereditary and protein
information ( Genetic Blueprint), energy, signals.

Do you think these molecules are important in

your development as a teenager?

Correct! These molecules really does affect many

processes in your body, you said earlier that it
affects our metabolism. What exactly is
metabolism?

Proteins are very important in our body it affects

your hormones, that is why you are familiar with
that.

Correct the media tells us that we need to be

sexy, light, skinned, tall etc. to be called
beautiful and also for us to be liked by others,
That’s why it is important that we watch what we
eat.
