Supply Chain Management Course

Outline
The aims of the course
Logistics is a wide and comprehensive subject which spans from single packages through
transport and over to complex global networks with major impacts as business deals on
management level. There are differences between how a company with 20 employees handle
the logistics issue compared with a multinational company with thousands of employees.
Although there is some basic logic that is equal, like warehouse, transports, order intake and
customer service as examples. In the former logistic course the subjects was primarily focused
on these issues. In this course the focus are set on relations between companies and in the
supply chain management which enhance the area and increase the complexity. We will move
between strategic, tactical and operational level and will cover how to develop production,
transports and relations between different actors more.

• Identify and explain central concepts in the area of logistic and control of supply chain
management
• Understand and be able to consider how customer demand and customer value affects
a business logistic system and processes
• Apply methods related to time, quality, and cost in order to make the logistic more
efficient and raise the whole supply chain competitiveness
• Describe logistic measures like segmentation and differentiation. Understand and
consider what an increasing international environment means for logistics
• Adapt Lean and JIT thinking in a supply chain.
• Understand when total flexibility (agility) is appropriate and be able to explain
possible combinations between lean- and agile approach
• Explain the meaning of cooperation and integration in supply chains and describe
different tools for above in the ICT environment
• Describe how supply chains and transport chains is affected by globalization.
• Analyze a logistic set up from efficiency perspective and suggest improvements out of
the analysis.
• Explain the responsibilities of the purchase function
• Explain different strategies and model for purchase
• Explain the way to work when choosing a supplier
• Analyze a purchase set up and suggest improvements

The schedule regarding rooms will be updated in KronoX. Check on this regularly due to
possible changes. In Canvas course module there will be a schedule with the contents of each
date and time.

Parts of the course


The course consists of four different parts
- Lecture series
- Seminar series
- Group Project
- Written exam

Lecture series
The course consists of lectures where theory is mixed with real examples in ordinary lecture.
Lectures will be held online over the whole semester by the above mentioned lecturer and
other guest lecturers. All lecture notes will be provided on the Canvas site after the actual
lectures.

Seminars
Two online seminars will be held during the course. The seminars are meant to give you a
deeper understanding of some of the course topics. Preparation for each seminar is done by
reading the corresponding chapters of the book and scientific papers which is provided from
the lecturers. You should also answer a set of questions and hand in this in writing before the
actual seminar. The hand in should be uploaded on Canvas according to a set deadline time. On
the seminar you are expected to be active and together with other students and one lecturer
discuss the topics during a session of 45 min. You will be called to a seminar time slot, and is
connected to your group project number. To pass the seminars you need to have all hand ins
approved and you also need to have participated in the seminar sessions. (If you are absent from
a seminar you have to do write an extra assignment for each missed seminar)

N.B There is a lot to read for each seminar so start in time. Especially the articles could take
some time to read and understand when you are not used to read this type of material.

The seminar series will cover the following subjects.


• Lean Thinking
• Agile setups
• Enterprise Resource Systems (ERP)
• Information Systems & Technology

To pass the seminars the following is mandatory:


- Be prepared and have read the assigned material
- Hand-ins on pre advised questions through Canvas before every seminars (One to one
and half page)
- Be active on the seminar and take part in the discussions
Group Project
The group project is based on your own purpose and research question, and the choice of topic
is up to the group to decide. The report must be analytical and a lot of emphasis will be put on
the analysis chapter. The work will also be presented and defended at the end of the course. The
report can be written in either Swedish or English. See separate instructions for further
information about the group project and important times/dates.

Written exam
At the end of the course a written online examination will be held. The time limit for this is four
hours and approved aids are a calculator and a dictionary.
