Program Title- MO WASH COMPANY
The primary objective of the proposed project is to tackle the complex issues associated with
water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, unemployment, and climate change in
the state of Odisha, India. This region faces significant challenges in providing adequate
WASH services, generating employment opportunities, and building resilience to climate
change impacts. The project aims to make WASH products and services more affordable and
accessible, particularly for low-income households. By promoting competition among
suppliers and facilitating the E Platform MO WASH Company, the project seeks to bring
down prices, improve the quality of WASH products, and increase access to communities in
rural areas. In response, the project aims to address these interconnected issues by
emphasizing entrepreneurship, livelihood development, and skill enhancement.
The project acknowledges the urgent need for improvements in WASH infrastructure,
including access to clean water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene practices. By implementing
innovative approaches and technologies, the project intends to enhance the availability and

Relevancy: Some additional statistics and data to support the importance and relevance
of the proposed project in addressing the challenges in Odisha:
1. Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Challenges:

 According to a report by UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), in


Odisha, approximately 4.7 million people lack access to clean drinking water sources.
 Only around 25% of households in rural areas of Odisha have access to improved
sanitation facilities, as reported by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4)
conducted in 2015-16.
 Inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene practices contribute to the prevalence of
waterborne diseases, with an estimated 9,500 deaths occurring annually in Odisha due
to diarrheal diseases (UNICEF).

2. Unemployment Challenges:

 Odisha has a significant youth population, with around 32% of the state's population
falling in the age group of 15-29 years (Census of India, 2011).
 According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted in 2019-20, Odisha
had an unemployment rate of approximately 7.6%, with higher rates among the youth.
 Limited employment opportunities exacerbate the problem of underemployment and
informal labor, leading to income insecurity and poverty in the region.

3. Climate Change Impacts:

 Odisha is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly in coastal


areas. The state frequently experiences cyclones, floods, and droughts, resulting in
significant economic losses and displacement of communities.
 According to the Climate Risk Index 2021, Odisha ranked as the third-most affected
state in India in terms of climate-related events between 2000 and 2019.
 The changing climate also affects agricultural productivity, with erratic rainfall
patterns and increased temperature impacting crop yields and livelihoods of farmers.

4. Youth Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Development:

 Promoting entrepreneurship among the youth can contribute to economic growth and
job creation. According to the National Sample Survey (NSS) 2016-17, the share of
self-employed youth in India was around 54%.
 Youth-led enterprises can play a crucial role in addressing local challenges, fostering
innovation, and promoting sustainable development.
 Skills development and vocational training programs are essential for equipping youth
with the necessary knowledge and capabilities to succeed as entrepreneurs or in the
job market.
By addressing the WASH challenges, unemployment, and climate change impacts with the
proposed project, Odisha can significantly improve access to clean water and sanitation,

These efforts would positively impact the health and well-being of the population, promote
economic development, and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the state.

Objectives:
The objectives of the Entrepreneurship Livelihoods and Skilling (ELS) program for Water
Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Climate Change can be outlined as follows:

1- Empowering Youth: The program aims to empower youth in Odisha by


providing them with entrepreneurial skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to
start and sustain their own enterprises in the WASH sector. By equipping young
individuals with the tools to become self-reliant, the program seeks to address
unemployment and create economic opportunities for the youth.

2- Enhancing WASH Infrastructure: The ELS program focuses on improving


WASH infrastructure in Odisha by promoting entrepreneurship and innovative
solutions. It aims to support the establishment and growth of local businesses that
provide clean water supply systems, sanitation facilities, and innovative hygiene
solutions. By fostering entrepreneurship in the WASH sector, the program aims to
enhance the availability and quality of WASH services, contributing to improved
health and well-being in communities.

3- Promoting Sustainable Practices: The program recognizes the importance of


addressing climate change and its impacts on WASH services. It aims to promote
sustainable practices in water management, sanitation, and hygiene. This includes
supporting entrepreneurs and enterprises that incorporate climate-resilient
technologies, such as rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, and eco-friendly
sanitation systems. By promoting sustainable practices, the program contributes to
building climate resilience and reducing the environmental impact of WASH
infrastructure.

4- Skill Development and Capacity Building: The ELS program emphasizes skill
development and capacity building in the WASH sector. It aims to provide
training and vocational education to individuals interested in entrepreneurship or
employment in the WASH field. The program focuses on equipping individuals
with technical skills, management expertise, and knowledge of best practices in

Empowering Odisha's future: clean water, thriving youth, and climate


resilience
Problem Statement:

1- Inadequate WASH Infrastructure: The state of Odisha faces significant


challenges in providing access to clean water, proper sanitation facilities, and
promoting hygiene practices. The existing WASH infrastructure is inadequate,
resulting in health risks, waterborne diseases, and reduced quality of life for
communities.
2- Unemployment and Lack of Opportunities: Odisha experiences high levels of
unemployment, particularly among the youth population. The lack of employment
opportunities and limited access to skill development programs hinder the
economic growth and potential of individuals, leading to income insecurity and
poverty.
3- Climate Change Vulnerability: Odisha is highly vulnerable to the impacts of
climate change, including increased frequency and intensity of cyclones, floods,
and droughts. These climate-related events pose significant risks to communities,
infrastructure, and livelihoods, further exacerbating the challenges of WASH
infrastructure and employment.
4- Limited Entrepreneurship and Innovation: The entrepreneurial ecosystem in
the WASH sector is underdeveloped in Odisha. The lack of support, funding, and
mentorship opportunities hampers the growth of innovative solutions and
enterprises, hindering the progress towards sustainable WASH services and
climate resilience.
5- Lack of Climate-Resilient WASH Solutions: The current WASH infrastructure
in Odisha is often ill-equipped to withstand the impacts of climate change. The
absence of climate-resilient technologies and practices undermines the long-term
sustainability and effectiveness of WASH services, leaving communities
vulnerable to climate-related risks.

Need of the Project:

1- Improved Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Services:


 According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4), only around 25% of

1- INTERACTIVE SESSIONS -WITNESS AND EXPERTS

social impact organisation and journey of them as a social entrepreneur. Subject matter
'experts' lead interactive workshops to help learn business basics on the lines of 14 focus
areas (mentioned below).
2- MENTORING
Each fellowship participant is paired with a Mentor who will provide guidance and
support. The mentor acts as a sounding board and is there to ensure you reflect, develop
and grow during the program and beyond.
3- ACTION LEARNING

challenge for entrepreneurs, particularly in marginalized communities. Limited
access to capital, loans, and infrastructure may hinder the establishment and
growth of WASH-related businesses. Identifying sources of funding and providing
financial support to entrepreneurs can help overcome this challenge.
 Technical Skills and Training Gaps: Developing the necessary technical skills
and expertise in the WASH sector is crucial for successful entrepreneurship.
However, there may be skill gaps in areas such as water treatment, sanitation
technology, and climate-resilient infrastructure. Providing targeted training and
capacity-building programs can address these gaps.
 Market Dynamics and Demand: Entrepreneurs need to understand market
dynamics, customer needs, and demands in the WASH sector. Identifying viable
business opportunities and ensuring a sustainable market for WASH products and
services can be challenging, particularly in rural or underserved areas where
affordability and willingness to pay may be limited.
 Regulatory and Policy Environment: Navigating complex regulatory
frameworks and compliance requirements can pose challenges for entrepreneurs.
Inconsistent policies, licensing procedures, and bureaucratic hurdles may create
barriers for setting up and scaling WASH-related businesses. Engaging with

 Behaviour Change and Community Engagement: Promoting behavior change
related to water sanitation, hygiene practices, and climate resilience can be
challenging. Overcoming deep-rooted cultural beliefs, traditional practices, and

awareness campaigns, and continuous education.
 Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation: Climate change impacts, such as
extreme weather events and resource scarcity, pose additional challenges for
entrepreneurs in the WASH sector. Incorporating climate resilience strategies,

of 3-4 days) to understand the business model & operations
- A state-based programme, inviting. application from across the state of Odisha
- Anyone with an idea to solve the problem around WASH theme with a
workable/feasible solution can join the programme - No barriers to entry: sexual
orientation, religion, education, location, caste etc. We invite applications from
entrepreneurs who have been operating & working with their
idea/solution/enterprise for minimum 1-2 years or an idea that is as early as on
paper/in the mind.
- Core focus is on the ENTREPRENEUR through developing their potential in
trading, revenue generation & creating social impact
- Identify sources of funding for eligible enterprises and linkages with financial
institutions
- Action based approach to LEARNING BY DOING
