ĐỀ KIỂM TRA TỰ LUẬN

MÔN: Ngữ pháp lý thuyết – Mã môn: EN13

(Mỗi sinh viên chỉ lựa chọn một đề cho bài kiểm tra tự luận của mình)

Đề 1
1. What is the difference between the basic noun phrase and the complex noun phrase? Give
examples for illustration.
2. What are the main types of concord? Give examples for illustration.

Đề 2
1. What is the difference between the premodification and the post-modification in the complex noun
phrase? Give examples for illustration.

Premodification and post-modification refer to the placement of adjectives or

other modifying elements within a complex noun phrase.

Premodification occurs when an adjective or other modifier is placed

before the noun it modifies, as in "red car" or "tall building." In these

examples, "red" and "tall" are the premodifiers.

Post-modification, on the other hand, occurs when a modifier is

placed after the noun it modifies, usually in the form of a relative clause,

as in "the car that I saw yesterday" or "the building with the green roof."
In these examples, "that I saw yesterday" and "with the green roof" are

postmodifiers.

Here are some additional examples of premodification and post-

modification:

- Pre-modification: "big dog," "old house," "white shirt"

- Post-modification: "the woman who lives next door," "the book that I just

read," "the car that needs repairs"

2. What are semantic feature roles of sentence elements? Give examples for

illustration.

The meaning of a predicate, especially a verb, may be characterized via the

relations that its arguments bear to it. Semantic roles—also known as thematic

relations, theta roles, participant roles, and deep cases—are labels for certain

recurring predicate-argument relations.

In other words, Semantic feature roles are the functions that sentence elements

play in conveying meaning. There are several common semantic feature roles for

sentence elements:

Agent: The entity that performs the action of the verb. Example: "John kicked

the ball." In this sentence, "John" is the agent.

Patient: The entity that undergoes the action of the verb. Example: "The ball

was kicked by John." In this sentence, "the ball" is the patient.

Theme: The topic or subject of the sentence. Example: "Dogs are loyal

animals." In this sentence, "dogs" is the theme.

Experiencer: The entity that experiences the action or state expressed by the
verb. Example: "I love chocolate." In this sentence, "I" is the experiencer.

Instrument: The tool or means used to perform the action. Example: "I cut the

paper with scissors." In this sentence, "scissors" is the instrument.

Location: The place where the action occurs or where the entity is located.

Example: "I live in a house." In this sentence, "house" is the location.

Here are some additional examples of semantic feature roles:

Agent: "The teacher taught the lesson."

Patient: "The cake was baked by the baker."

Theme: "The sky is blue."

Experiencer: "The baby laughed at the funny toy."

Instrument: "The musician played the guitar."

Location: "The cat is on the roof."
