(PDF) Analyzing Patterns - Logical Reasoning

The document provides notes on logical reasoning patterns questions that may appear on the BITSAT exam. It discusses three types of patterns: 1) pattern perception questions that require identifying the missing part of an incomplete figure, 2) figure formation and analysis questions involving shapes, and 3) counting the number of specific figures within a larger shape. An example is provided for each type of pattern question to illustrate the concepts. The document aims to help test takers understand different logical reasoning question formats.

SHORT NOTES

ANALYZING
PATTERNS

Logical Reasoning Notes BITSAT

1. Pattern Perception:

In the Pattern Perception category of questions, an incomplete figure is given and a quarter
part of the complete figure is missing. All you have to do is to choose the correct missing
segment from the choices given in the options. This chosen part should exactly fit into this
blank missing portion of the figure and make it a complete one.

Example:

Question:

Select from the alternatives, the figure (X) that exactly fits in the main figure to complete its
original pattern.

Answer:

In the given question, by observation we can say that the shaded leaf is moved in a
clockwise direction. Hence, option (b) is correct.

2. Figure Formation and Analysis:

We can get the questions of the following types in this given topic:

(i) Formation of triangles/square/rectangle etc. either by joining the three figures on

choosing them from the given four figures in the question or by joining any of the either
pieces on selecting from the given options.

(ii) Making a figure from the components given in the options.

(iii) Making of a 3D diagram by paper folding.

(iv) Rearranging the parts of the figure given in the question.

(v) Formation of simple pieces by fragmenting the key figure.

Example:

Question:

A set of five figures (A), (B), (C), (D) and (E) are followed by four combinations as the
alternatives. Select the alternative which represents the combination of figures if filled
together, will form a complete triangle.

(a) BCD

(b) ABD

(c) CDE

(d) ABE

Solution:

The resultant figure will be a triangle if the figures A, B and E are fitted together.

3. Counting of Figures:

We are given a shape or figure in ‘counting of figures’ type of questions. In the given shape,
we have to identify the number of times the given known shape is present.

It will be easier if you number or mark all the vertices or the point of intersections in the
given figure as the alphabets and then count the total number of known shapes.

Example:

Question 1: What is the number of triangles in the following figure?

Solution: First of all, label all the vertices and point of intersections as,

The triangles can be counted as (B F G), (C G H), (E F M), (F M G), (G M N), (G H N), (H N I), (L
M K), (M N K), and (K N J). Total number of triangles is 10.
