SWITCH GEAR AND PROTECTION
(Electrical and Electronics Engineering)

Note: Answer one question from each unit.
All questions carry equal marks.

UNIT-I
1. a) Derive expression for RRRV, maximum RRRV and frequency of oscillations of restriking
voltage circuit breaker. (6M)
b) Why current chopping is not common in oil circuit breakers? (4M)

2. a) What are the electrical properties of SF6 gas? (4M)
b) In 132 Kv, 50hz System, the reactance and capacitance up to the location of the circuit
breaker is 3 ohms and 0.015 uF respectively. Determine (i) the maximum value of
restriking voltage (iv) maximum value of RRRV (iii) the frequency of transient oscillation.

3. a) Discuss the basic requirements of protective relays. (5M)
b) Derive expression for universal torque equation. (5M)

4. Explain with the help of neat sketch the construction and working of directional induction
type over current relay. (10M)

5. a) Develop the operating characteristics of the impedance type distance relay in R-X plane.

UNIT-IV
7. A 3-phase transformer rated for 33 kV/6.6kV is connected star-delta and the protecting current
transformer on the low voltage side have a ratio of 400/5. Determine the ratio of the current
transformer on the HV side. (10M)

8. The neutral point of a 3-phase, 25MVA, 11kV alternator is earthed through a resistance of 5Ω.
The relay is set to operate when there is an out of balance current of 1.5 A. The CT’s have a
ratio of 1000/5. What percentage of winding is protected against an earth fault and what
should be the minimum value of earthing resistance to protect the 90 percentage of the
winding? (10M)

9. Discuss how the bus bars are protected by differential protection. (10M)

10. Distinguish time grading, current grading and time and current grading methods with
examples for the over current protection of feeders. (10M)
UNIT-VI
11. Explain various methods of neutral grounding. (10M)

12. a) What is the necessity for grounding the power system? (5M)
b) Describe the effects of an un-grounded neutral, when subjected to a fault. (5M)
