This document outlines safe operating procedures for centrifugal pumps. It discusses inspection points before startup like pipe cleanliness, alignment, and lubrication. Pre-startup checks include verifying lubrication, cooling, power source, and liquid levels. Startup procedures specify opening valves in a certain sequence as the pump reaches speed. The document also provides guidance for checking the pump during operation and shutdown procedures like closing valves in a specific order.

SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES (SOP)

FOR CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS

Inspection Works Before Start-Up

In the initial stage, factors to be considered the starting of any
centrifugal pump include.
 Pipe Cleanliness.
 Alignment Of Pump.
 Rotation Of Rotor.
 Pump Bearings.
 Sight Gase Glass.
 Lube oil System.
 Lubricants.
 Pump Exterior.
 Pump Driver.
 Priming And Barring.
 Pump Auxiliary Piping.

Pre Start-Up Check Points.

 The lubrication system of all bearing points must be checked.
 Cooling water must be circulating through all water cooling systems.
 Prime mover power (electricity or Steam, etc as a driving force) should
be
checked.
 Rotate the Pump rotor by hand.
 The delivery valve closed for Centrifugal Pump otherwise delivery valve
should be open.
 The pump should be warmed gradually by slowly circulating hot liquid
through the pump.
 level of liquid at the suction side should be checked.
 The Gland Bolts are properly tightened.

Start-Up Procedures.
 The suction valve should be open.
 Ensure that Priming should be performed properly.
 The re-circulation valve or spill-back line should be opened.
 When the pump reached normal operating speed open the discharge valve slowly.
 The liquid is brought into the pump by venting the casing.
 The suction line should be full of liquid to be pumped.
 The direction of rotation should be checked by the ON-OFF switch.
 The pump should started-up with the aid of a prime mover.
Check the pump During running and regulate if
required
 The pump is running smooth.
 The bearing are not getting abnormally hot of both pump and motor.
 The flow of cooling liquid and cooling water is uninterrupted in case of mechanical seal
type pump.
 Ensure motor current to be within limit.
 Ensure there is no mechanical friction in the pump or abnormal sound.
 The gland is properly tightened to ensure sufficient leakage to dissipate heat
generated. Maximum permissible leakage is 60 to 80 drops per minute.
 Stop the pump immediately, if any, defects or abnormally found or detected. Rectify the
defect and restart the pump.

Shutdown Works.
When a pump operates against a high discharge pressure the following steps are
to be adopted to shut down the pump.
 Close the valve on delivery line.
 Shut off the power.
 As soon as the power is off, close the discharge valve fully.
 Do not shut off the cooling and sealing liquid Supply until the shaft has stopped
turning fully.
