Module Overview
Year 1
Compulsory Modules
The module aims to enable you to recognise, and use an essential core of mathematical methods to support your further study
of engineering and technology.
Our module aims to provide you with an underpinning knowledge of engineering design which will support your academic career.
You will study 3 key areas: Design, CAD and Professional Development in order to prepare yourself for your chosen career and
build on your personal development.
Our module aims to introduce the fundamental principles of thermal and fluid engineering science and establish knowledge of
basic engineering practice and problem solving techniques. You will establish a basic knowledge of engineering science to
complement studies in general engineering.
On this module you'll be introduced to vehicle configurations and capabilities. You'll also look at the fundamentals of flight
physics, systems and environments, the main elements of vehicle performance and the key issues in vehicle operations.
Year 2
Compulsory Modules
MP2576: Thermo-fluids
Optional Modules
The aim of this module is to introduce you to the standard principles for fixed-wing aircraft design and optimisation. You'll review
the basics of aircraft aerodynamics, structures, propulsion and control. You'll also develop working practices for aircraft test and
evaluation and in manufacturing and assembly.
The aim of this module is for you to learn the key concepts of engineering simulations in engineering applications.
MP2576: Thermo-Fluids
This module will introduce you to the principles of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics in the context of aerodynamics and
heat engines and motor sports engineering. It will develop your problem solving, mathematical modelling and computational
modelling skills.
In this module you will develop the skills and knowledge that is needed to be able to participate in an operations management
team.
On this module you'll further your knowledge of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Simulation as used in the
engineering industry.
Year 3
Compulsory Modules
EI3030: Aeromechanics
In this module you will plan and develop a report on an investigation of a design. You will have the opportunity to examine
aspects of your study using engineering simulations and tests. Your work has the potential to lead on to the development of
new knowledge, methods or applications.
We aim to develop your knowledge of the mathematical framework for modelling vehicle dynamics, calculations for
forces/moments acting on air and space vehicles, investigate stability and control of flight vehicles, and undertake the
preliminary design of flight control systems.
EI3030: Aeromechanics
You'll develop a mathematical and scientific framework for flight physics and structural mechanics as well as learn about flow
patterns around airfoils with different geometries. You'll calculate load distribution on an aircraft and study vehicle design
features for flow regimes.
Our module aims to explore contemporary trends in technological developments. You will be provided a technical overview of
main engine types and applications. You will also study scientific frameworks and research methods around calculating engine
performance.
This module will introduce you to Computer Aided Design (CAD) concerning the design process. You will learn about shape
modelling in the engineering process and gain an extensive knowledge of 3D modelling functions. You will also be introduced to
parametric programming using CAD, its language, and how to use it to solve problems.
To enable the student to develop the skills and knowledge required to lead an operations management team.
Year 4
Compulsory Modules
Optional Modules
You'll design, develop and demonstrate an integrated aerospace product comprising structure and systems, with due regard to
business, commercial and environmental considerations. You'll participate in collaborative activities leading to initial concepts,
down-selection, product mechanisation and flight clearance, including quality audits, risk management and safety cases. And
you'll apply relevant analytical methods, including modelling and simulation. During the project you'll be expected to
demonstrate your proficiency in the relevant mathematics, science and technologies, as well as your skills in management,
communication, team performance and personal responsibility.
You will gain experience in the processes of maintaining product integrity within engineering design and the product cycle. You'll
look at the responsibilities of the engineer to both the enterprise and society by looking at both national and international
standards. You will also analyse and evaluate several risks and ethical and legal responsibilities.
You'll study the principles, capabilities and limitations of vehicle simulation. You'll develop computational models of aerospace
vehicles and systems. As well as characterise physics of flight environments. The module presents working practices for virtual
test and evaluation. You'll leave with advanced skills in computing and simulation.
The module reviews fundamental principles of aircraft flight. You'll investigate the principles of high-speed aerodynamics,
analyse flight dynamics of flexible aircraft. As well as the dynamics of an aircraft during take-off and landing.
The module presents fundamentals of structural design and material selection. You'll investigate “ambitious” structural design.
Review current state of materials and processes. As well as summarise methods for structural assembly. The module
introduces the challenges of structural and material degradation.
The module is an overview of civil aerospace operations. You'll develop a culture of flight safety. Review the challenges
associated with information and interoperability. You'll understand the technical basis for ATM/CNS and deep space missions.
As well as develop principles of autonomous operations.
