Assignment#3 Optoelectronics

The document is a student assignment containing 7 examples of calculating optical fiber parameters from given values. [1] The first example calculates the critical angle and acceptance angle for a fiber with core refractive index of 1.6 and cladding index of 1.3. [2] The second example finds the cladding index if the core index is 1.54 and numerical aperture is 0.5. [3] The third example calculates the numerical aperture given the core and cladding indices. [4] The remaining examples solve for various fiber parameters such as refractive index, numerical aperture, number of modes, and attenuation using core/cladding indices and other specified values.

Workout problem:
Example 24.1: In an optical fiber, the core material has refractive index 1.6
and refractive index of clad material is 1.3. what is e value for critical angle?
Also calculate the value of angle of acceptance cone.
Solution:
Critical angle is given by
𝑛2
sin 𝜙𝑐 =
𝑛1
Putting values
1⋅3
sin 𝜙𝑐 =
1⋅6
sin 𝜙𝑐 = 0 ⋅ 8125
𝜙𝐶 = 54 ⋅ 30
Now calculating the acceptance angle which is given by

𝜃0 = sin−1 √𝑛12 − 𝑛22

Putting values

𝜃0 = sin−1 √1.62 − 1.32

𝜃0 = sin−1(0.87)
𝜃0 = 60. 50
Angle of acceptance cone is given by
2𝜃 = 1210

Example 24.2: the numerical aperture of an optical fibre is 0.5 and core
refractive index is 1.54. find the refractive index of cladding.
Solution:
Cladding refractive index is fiven by

𝑛2 = √𝑛12 − (𝑁𝐴)2

Putting values

Page | 2
𝑛2 = √1 ⋅ 542 − 0 ⋅ 52
𝑛2 = 1 ⋅ 46

Example 24.3: What is the numerical aperture of an optical fibre cable with a
clad index of 1.378 and a core index of 1.546?
Solution:

𝑁𝐴 = √𝑛12 − 𝑛22

𝑁𝐴 = √1 ⋅ 5462 − 1 ⋅ 3782

𝑁𝐴 = √0.491
𝑁𝐴 = 0.70

Example 24.4: a fibre cable has an angle of 30’ and a core index of refraction
is 1.4. calculate the refractive index of the cladding.
Solution:

sin 𝜃0 = √𝑛12 − 𝑛22

sin 𝜃0 2 = 𝑛12 − 𝑛22

𝑛22 = 𝑛12 − sin 𝜃0 2
𝑛22 = 1.42 − sin 302
𝑛22 = 1.96 − 0.25
𝑛22 = 1.71
𝑛2 = 1.308

Example 24.5: a step index in air has NA of 0.16, a core refractive index of
1.45 and a core diameter of 60µm. Determine the normalized frequency for
the fibre when light at wavelength of 0.9µm is transmitted.
Solution:
πd
V= (NA)
λ
(3.143 ∗ 60 ∗ 10−6 ∗ 0.16)m
V=
0.9 ∗ 10−6 m
V = 33.5

Example 24.6: A step index of diameter 50µm has NA of 0.23. if the

wavelength of inout light energy is 0.82µm, determine the number of modes in
the cable.
Solution:
The number of modes in cable is given by

2.22𝑑(𝑁𝐴) 2
𝑀𝑛 = [ ]
𝜆
putting values
2
2.22 ∗ 50 ∗ 10−6 ∗ 0.23
𝑀𝑛 = [ ]
0.82 ∗ 10−6

𝑀𝑛 = 969

Example 24.7: optical power of 1mW is launched into an optical fibre of

length 100m. if the power emerging from the other end 0.3mW, calculate the
fibre attenuation.
Solution:
Attenuation (α):
10 𝑃𝑖
𝛼= 𝑙𝑜𝑔
𝐿 𝑃𝑜
10 1𝑚𝑊
𝛼= 𝑙𝑜𝑔
𝐿 0.3𝑊
𝛼 = 52.3 𝑑𝐵/𝐾𝑚
