Fig.2 actuator control scheme

The pressure oil from the oil supply system is divided into two flows after passing
through oil filter. One flow goes to fast closing solenoid valves and the other flow goes to
control solenoid valve. On the valve actuator, there are 2 redundant fast closing solenoid
valves which receive signals from drive turbine protection system. The fast closing solenoid
valves are in energized status when the turbine is running normally. The valve will be
quickly closed when the fast closing solenoid valves are de-energized. When the fast closing
solenoid valves receive signals from turbine protection system and loss power, they will
connect the pressure oil of check valves to the drain oil path to open the check valves. The
check valves are between the working chamber and the non-working chamber of oil cylinder
piston. Once the check valves are opened, the two chambers will be connected and the oil
pressure on the two sides of the piston will be same. The valve actuator will be quickly
closed under the spring force. The oil in the working chamber of the piston will return to the
non-working chamber, which increases the drain oil speed.
The control solenoid valve receives signals from control system, to let the pressure oil

work on piston, to open the valve as required, or release the pressure oil from cylinder, to
close the valve.
The control block is installed on the oil cylinder body, is arranged the fast closing
solenoid valves, control solenoid valve and inserted type check valve. The internal oil paths
of the control block are connected to the oil paths of oil cylinder casing. The fast closing
solenoid valves are two-position-three-way solenoid valves that receive control signals from
protection system. When the coils of fast closing solenoid valves are energized, the pressure
oil port P and control oil port A are connected, the pressure oil effect on the check valve.
When the coils power is lost, the pressure oil P port closed, that will connect control the oil A
port with return oil port T, the pressure oil of the check valve will back to return line

3 Fast closing solenoid valve

Fast closing solenoid valve is an important component of turbine protection system,
which is directly installed on the stop valve actuator, fast closing solenoid valve is redundant
configuration, when each solenoid valve acts, the turbine will stop safely. Solenoid valve is
charged with electric power normally, and be safe when losing power.

4 Control Solenoid valve

Stop valve actuator is two-way actuator, controlled by control solenoid valve. When
turbine normally resets, signal from MEH makes control solenoid power off, to make
actuator fully open, in order to test the flexibility of valve stem, stop valve motion test is
available, signal from MEH makes control solenoid valve power on, the pressure oil in
cylinder will be connected with return oil directly, actuator starts to close.

5 Limit Switch Box

There are three limit switches on stop valve actuator, to show the position of stop valve,
one for fully open, two for fully close

6 Terminal box
A terminal box is installed on actuator for wiring.

7 Actuator flushing
Actuator is flushed in manufacturer, cleanliness: NAS 5, no more flushing in power
plant.

8 Actuator maintenance
To skillfully use this hydraulic system, it is necessary that the contents of this manual is
well understood and the instructions in this manual are strictly followed.
The purpose of this manual is to provide the operators with the normal operation and
maintenance instructions of this hydraulic system. If the operators lack the relative
knowledge of hydraulic components and systems, to some extent, during operation, dangers
may be caused or the function of this system is not fully developed due to wrong operation.
There are isolating valve on the pressure oil pipe at the oil tank outlet. If the valve
actuator has faults and needs to be on-line examined without tripping the drive turbine, the
corresponding valve actuator can be isolated from the system by closing the isolating valve
to examine or repair the device.
Before the hydraulic or electric components are removed, they should be disconnected
with MEH to ensure that there is no danger at the systems or motors.
Before disassembly
--- All the assembly parts and components need to be cleaned and the relative cautions
need to be kept in mind to prevent dirt from entering the system.
--- The disassembly work can only be conducted by professional maintenance
personnel.
Disassembly
--- All the parts should be marked. Fine machining or mechanical surface should be
protected.
--- All the parts should be checked whether they have been worn or broken.
--- If the hydraulic oil needs to be released and is to be reused, the container used to
hold the oil must be clean and needs to be sealed with lid when it is not used.
--- Before reassembly, all the metal parts should be cleaned with proper solution and
then put on clean linen to absorb the oil.
Reassembly
--- Lubrication with system hydraulic oil.
--- All the sealing, gaskets and O rings should be replaced with new and same type
spares.

2 Operation
Working principle (Figure 2): regulated actuator is single acting, pressure oil from the
oil supply system after the filter is divided into two, one way to a fast closing solenoid valve,
another way to the electro-hydraulic servo valve. Fast closing solenoid valve is redundant
configuration, signal comes from the turbine protection system. When normal working, the
solenoid valve is energized state. When losing power, the valve quick closing. When the fast
closing solenoid valve receives a loss of power signal from the protection system, the
solenoid valve will control the check valve to be connected to the return oil, to open the
check valve. The check valve is connected with the upper and lower chambers of the
cylinder piston, so that the upper and lower chambers of the piston are connected, both sides
of the pressure of the piston is balanced. Actuator acts rapidly by the power of spring, the oil
of cylinder lower part quickly returns to the upper portion, to accelerate the speed of oil
returning.

The electro-hydraulic servo valve receives an electric signal from control system,
according to the needs, to send pressure oil to the piston to open the valve, or release the
pressure oil from the cylinder, so that the valve will be closed. The control system accepts
the position feedback signal from the valve, to compare with control signal, then send an
order to the electro-hydraulic servo valve, thus the valve is precisely opened in required
position.
The control block is arranged the fast closing solenoid valve, servo valve and an
inserted type check valve. Fast closing valve is two positions-three way electromagnetic
valve, the electromagnetic valve to receive the protection system’s control signal. When the
coil energized the pressure oil P port and control port A are connected, the pressure oil effect
on the check valve. When the coil power is lost, the electromagnetic valve pressure oil P port
closed, that will connect control the oil A port with return oil port T, the pressure oil of the
check valve will back to return line.

3 Fast closing solenoid valve

Fast closing solenoid valve is an important safety unit, which is directly installed on the
regulated actuator, fast closing solenoid valve is redundant configuration, when each

power normally, and be safe when losing power.

4 LVDT
Position Transmitter (LVDT) is linear variable differential transmitter, which is an
electric-mechanic transmitter. LVDT generates differential signals that are proportional to its
shell displacement. It is composed of 3 coils that are evenly distributed on the round coil
stand, 1 magnetic core is fixed on the actuator connecting rod. This magnetic core moves
axially along the coil set and form a magnetic flux path that connects the coils. The middle
coil is primary coil which is simulated by intermediate frequency current. In this way,
voltage will be induced on the outer 2 coils. The 2 outer coils (secondary) are
series-opposing connected that the phases of the 2 secondary coils are just the opposite. The
output of the transformer is the difference value of the 2 voltages. The output of the middle
position of the magnetic core is 0, so this position is called zero-position. Zero-position is the
middle of actuator stroke adjusted mechanically. The output of LVDT is alternating. After it
is commutated by demodulator (negative feedback) and compared with MEH required valve

the motor with permanent magnet (2) of the first (1) and the design of nozzle flapper valve
hydraulic amplifier, used to control the mainstream volume second (4).Pilot control for

electric motor phase equilibrium, the pressure is reduced to zero. Thus, the control spool (10)
trip is proportional to input signal. The actual flow rate from the valve to the actuator of
depends on the valve differential pressure. External electronic amplifier (servo amplifier), is
used to control the valve. The analog input signal (a given signal) magnified, made output
signal from control electronic amplifier can be used to control servo valve.

1 Control system overview

When drive turbine is under normal working condition, the steam of drive turbine is
provided by the IP extraction steam (4th stage extraction steam) of main turbine. The speed
governing range of drive turbine is 2800 to 5000 (or 6000) r/min (refer to product manual for
detailed value).
The low pressure steam source enters drive turbine through LSV and LGV. LSV is
two-position valve and only has full open and full close position. LSV is controlled by LSV
actuator. LGV is governing valves and controlled by LGV actuator.
Drive turbine control system is mainly composed of MEH, METS, MTSI and control
oil system. MEH, METS and MTSI are together in charge of drive turbine control, protection
and monitoring. Control oil system is mainly in charge of supplying pressure oil to valve
actuators. Please refer to corresponding hardware manuals for MEH, METS and MTSI
hardware information.

2 Task and function

The main function of MEH is to control the steam inlet flow passing through LGV.
According to operating requirements, the control objects of MEH include drive turbine
speed,, etc. under different conditions.
MEH is redundant digital control system. Drive turbine speed, vacuum, lube oil
pressure, etc. signals are sent to controllers in 2 out of 3 scheme. The output valve position
demand signal is sent to electric-hydraulic valve actuators after being amplified to control
drive turbine LGV position. MEH controls drive turbine speed according to boil feed water
requirement.

2.1 MEH control mode

MEH has three control modes,as follow:
Manual control mode(MANUAL)
Automatically control Operator automatically control mode
(AUTO) (SPEED AUTO)
Remote control (REMOTE)
Manual control mode is an open loop control mode under which operator can change
the output of MEH directly by clicking the increase or decrease soft key on the MANUAL

PANEL graphic;Under operator automatically control mode, operator can change the drive
turbine speed target by operating on the main operation menu to control the output of MEH
in a close loop mode. No matter automatically or manual, operator automatically control or
remote control, each mode can be switched over without disturbance.

2.2 MEH control

MEH realizes all monitoring and operating functions through MEH graphics.
2.2.1 Signal monitoring
The display of analog signals. These signals include valve position of LGV, rear casing
exhaust pressure, speed, etc.
The display of digital signals. These signals include LSV status, drive turbine trip and
latch, control mode, etc.
Operators need to operate the control buttons and data entering windows.
2.2.2 Start up control
After drive turbine has been latched, LSV is opened by control solenoid valve on LSV
actuators. LSV flexibility test and LSV control functions can be conducted by buttons “LSV
TEST” and “LSV OPEN”.
2.2.3 Control mode selection
OA mode, MANUAL mode or REMOTE mode can be selected by buttons
“OPERATOR AUTO”,“MANUAL” and“REMOTE”.

2.3 MTSI signal monitoring

MTSI monitors signals of vibration, eccentricity, rotor position, zero speed, key phasor,
etc.

2.4 MEH speed measuring

Each drive turbine has 3 channels for speed measuring. As the speed transmitter,
magnetic speed sensors send drive turbine speed to MEH speed measuring modules in the
form of frequency.
3 speed signals are judged in MEH and the effective channels are selected as speed
feedback and sent to MEH. The fault channels will be reported to operator as alarms. If 2 or
more speed channels of these 3 are fault, MEH will automatically switch the operation mode
to manual mode.

1.1.4.3 Remote control mode

Under remote control mode, the speed set point shall track the external
speed signal from the boil feed water control system. The speed set point will be
changed directly by the change of the external speed signal. The range of the
speed set point is 2800~6000rpm which is corresponding to the external input
signal (4~20mA). So the working speed range under remote control mode is
2800~6000rpm. The remote control mode can not be switched to when drive
turbine speed is lower than 2800rpm. In order to prevent the external signal from
changing too fast and influencing the normal running of turbine, MEH has
limitation on the change rate of the external signal and the limitation value is
500rpm/min.

4 Protection signals
This METS first out menu mainly monitors and protects signals that are
critical to the safe operation of drive turbine. Once any protection reaches trip
condition, METS will de-energize the trip solenoid valves to close the steam
valves, trip and protection the drive turbine. The green color of digital signals on
the graphic means protection is in normal status and red color means protection
trips the turbine.
Common conditions that may trip the turbine are listed in the METS first out
graphic (the details may be different according to different turbine types). Once
any of the condition reaches trip value, the light corresponding to this condition
in the trip condition column becomes red, otherwise the light is green.
Lights in the first out column are lights indicating trip first out conditions. The

1 Overview
Emergency trip system (METS) monitors the important running parameters. When these
parameters exceed the running limitation, METS gives trip signal to immediately close the
stop valve and governing valve to keep the drive turbine in safe condition, thus avoiding the
instruments to be damaged.
The over speed protection of drive turbine is composed of two redundant sets of electric
over speed protection devices. When the speed of drive turbine reaches the over speed
protection set point, all the fast closing solenoid valves on valve actuators shall loss power to
quickly shut down the turbine.

2 Over speed protection system

In over speed protection system, the traditional mechanical over speed protection module
is canceled and there are two sets of electric over speed protection. The over speed protection
are composed of 6 speed modules to build two sets of 3-channel speed monitoring system.
The 3 speed channels measure and display drive turbine speed independently that alarm signal
will be generated when any of the 3 channels is failed.
The 2 sets of electric over speed protection devices control power supply of the fast
closing solenoid valves on each valve actuator of drive turbine. The action of any of the 2 sets
electric over speed protection devices shall cut off the power supply to fast closing solenoid
valves on all valve actuators, which shall cause the steam valves to be quickly closed under
the spring force and shut down the drive turbine.
The over speed protection signals from speed monitoring modules are 2 out of 3 logic
processed through relay circuit. The relay contacts of the 2 sets of over speed protection
devices are series connected in the power supply loop of fast closing solenoid valves and
directly cut off the power supply to the fast closing solenoid valves to trip the turbine. The
speed signals are also sent to the MEH controller (control and protection function) and are 2
out of 3 logic processed in the software, then together with other protection signals, control
the fast closing solenoid valves on valve actuators through IO modules.
non-contact type magnetic speed sensors are used together with speed modules to
monitor the drive turbine speed.
Magnetic speed sensors are passive devices that give speed pulse signals in standard sine
wave form. Please refer to the relative drawings for installation details.

3 Data collection and processing system
Data collection and processing system include IO modules, controller and relative logics.
The protection signals from field or other systems are sent to IO modules, then to the
controller. The final drive turbine protection signals shall be formed after logic processing of
these protection signals. The final protection signals are sent to the relative trip solenoid
valves through IO modules to quickly shut down the drive turbine.
There are no specific trip solenoid valves for this drive turbine. The single trip signal
from METS is sent to fast closing solenoid valves on each valve actuators.
The system is composed of redundant processors, IO modules, overspeed protection
modules, etc. See Fig.1

Fig.1 Emergency trip system scheme

The protection system (METS) receives turbine protection signals from sensors or DCS.
The protection signals are sent to controllers through IO modules. Redundant protection
signals are distributed to different modules and processed in controllers. The final trip signals
are sent out through redundant IO modules to control the fast closing solenoid valves on valve
actuators. When these signals exceed the preset alarming point, alarms are given. When the
parameters continue changing and exceed trip set point, trip signals are given that control the
solenoid valves on valve actuators and trip the turbine.

4 Composition of protection loop
The standard protection are 2 out of 3 configured (some special signals excluded). They
include data measuring and collection devices, signal processing, trip signal generation and
protection signal output. With this kind of design, all the drive turbine protection loops can be
completed without additional testing devices. The drive turbine protection conditions are
determined by the turbine safety requirements. Drive turbine is not allowed to run without
these protection loops being in effect.
The protection signals of METS include over speed protection, vacuum protection, lube
oil pressure protection, vibration protection, rotor displacement protection, boiler MFT
protection, emergency push button, etc… Through corresponding IO modules, these signals
are sent to controllers and then calculated and processed to generate the final trip signals
which are used to control the trip solenoid valves through redundant IO modules to quickly
close steam valves.

5 EH trip system
In the electric-hydraulic (EH) trip system of this drive turbine, each valve actuator is
independent and acts individually. There are two parallel trip solenoid valves on each valve
actuator that any one of the two parallel trip solenoid valves acting will quickly close the
corresponding valves. Each trip solenoid valves receives trip signal from METS individually
to quickly close steam valves. The trip solenoid valve are normal energized and will act when
losing power supply. The power supply is 24VDC, provided by METS. Please refer to the
valve actuator clauses for detailed schemes.

6 Protection items explanation

6.1. Manual trip
There are emergency push buttons both at field (front of drive turbine) and in the central
control room. Some contacts are series connected in the power supply loop of trip solenoid
valves and some contacts give signals to METS system. When manual emergency trip is
required, the power supply of trip solenoid valves can be cut off to trip the drive turbine by
the emergency trip push buttons.
6.2. Vibration protection
Bearing vibration sensors are installed on 45°of both left and right sides. Two vibration
sensors are installed on each bearing of drive turbine. The vibration trip signals are sent to

MEH for processing. When the vibration of any bearing exceeds the set point, MEH will give
signals to METS to trip the drive turbine.
6.3. Rotor displacement
There are two rotor displacement sensor installed on the front bearing pedestal of drive
turbine. Rotor position signals are sent to MEH after they are 2 out of 2 logic processed by
MEH. Protection signals are sent out immediately when set point is exceeded to trip the drive
turbine.
6.4 Lube oil pressure
Lube oil pressure is the protection item in lube oil system. Signals from 3 pressure
measuring points are sent to MEH to conduct 2 out of 3 processing. All the lube oil pressure
measuring instruments are integrated on the lube oil tank. Lube oil pressure measuring points
are on the main oil pipe after lube oil filter.
6.5 Exhaust pressure
In order to protect drive turbine LP casing exhaust stage blade and prevent condenser
excessive pressure, exhaust pressure of exhaust casing needs to be limited. When the exhaust
pressure exceeds limit value, protection system will trip the drive turbine.
There are 3 measuring points for exhaust pressure measurement. Signals are sent to METS
to conduct 2 out of 3 processing. METS will give protection signal and trip the turbine when
the exhaust pressure is higher than set point.
6.6 Other protection items
METS also receives trip signals from other systems. These signals include DCS
protection trip, boiler MFT trip, important temperature measuring points ultra limit trip, etc

1 Overview
Turbine supervisory instrumentation(MTSI)is a reliable and multi-channel supervisory
instrumentation that can continuously measure the mechanical running parameters of the
turbine rotor and casing, display turbine running condition, provide signals output to recorder,
output alarm or trip signals when the running limitations are exceeded and output measuring
signals for fault diagnosis.
The parameters monitored and measured by MTSI include but not limited to:
(1) Bearing vibration.
Number is relative with number of bearings (bearing vibration monitoring of feedwater
pump can be included). Relative bearing vibration is measured and can be continuously
displayed, recorded, alarmed and protected.
Vibration monitoring modules are used to measure rotor relative vibration of turbine and
display on the LCD of MEH.
(2) Thrust bearing wearing.
The main rotor displacement is measured from one point and can be continuously
displayed, recorded, alarmed and protected.
A thrust wearing bearing monitoring module measures the rotor thrust bearing position
with respect to the thrust bearing supporting point. The non-contact eddy-current type probes
monitor the axial displacement of thrust bearing. When the displacement of rotor exceeds set
point, the emergency relay in MTSI will react. The emergency relay will trip the turbine
through METS system. Each turbine has two thrust bearing wearing probes, a relay output is
given after “and” logic processing to prevent faulty action.
(3) Eccentricity.
Rotor eccentricity is monitored and can be continuously displayed, recorded, alarmed.
When the turbine is stopped, since the temperature of upper part and lower part of rotor in
the casing are different, the rotor will bend due to uneven cooling. Turning gear can rotate the
rotor slowly to make temperature of every part of rotor tend to the same, thus reducing the
bending.
The bending of rotor is displayed on MEH LCD as continuous peak-to-peak value.
Eccentricity is monitored when rotor speed is lower than 600rpm and vibration is monitored
when rotor speed is higher than 600rpm.

IC.Z44.60003.01-E00 Page 2 of 3
There is alarm signal output for eccentricity monitoring module that the relay will react
when eccentricity reaches alarm set point.
(4) Key phasor.
A key phasor monitoring module is used to provide the relative angle relationship
between the “highest point” of specific bearing and drive turbine rotor, which is the first
balance hole in supervisory instrumentation.
(5) Zero speed.
A relay output will be given by the zero speed monitoring module when the system
comes to zero speed. Zero speed probe reads the number of raised tooth of the speed
measuring gear. The relay output is used to react turning gear and for alarm.

1.1 Structure instruction

MTSI system includes racks, proximetors, cables, probes etc. Racks are panel
assembling type. Probes are used to monitor phases, thrust disc and other mechanical surface
clearance, and transform them to relative displacements for processing. Each probe is
connected to corresponding proximator by cables.
Proximators are installed close to the probes and are connected to corresponding
modules by shielding cables.

1.2 Rack
Power supply modules are installed on left side of each rack and MTSI monitoring
modules are installed in other positions of the rack. Signal modules are installed on the rear
side of each rack. Relay modules are connected to external alarm display devices. Signal
modules are connected to relative sensors and recorders. Power supply signals and power
input modules are installed on the rear side of power supply modules of each rack. There are
power input terminals on power input modules.
