Short Questions
01. Find the number of different combinations when taking 8 coins out of
a bag containing 10 different silver coins and 5 different bronze coins.
(i) When there is no restriction in the selections
(ii) When at least 2 bronze coins are among the selection.

02. From 8 capitals, 3 vowels and 5 consonants, how many words of 4


letters each can be formed if each word begins with a capital and
contains at least 1 vowel, all the letters of each word being different.

03. Five balls of different colours are to be placed in three boxes of


different sizes. How many ways can be placed the balls so that no box
remains empty.

04. My brother Mark decides to put together a rock band from amongst his
year at school. He wants a lead singer, a guitarist, a keyboard player
and a drummer. He invites applications and gets 7 singers, 5 guitarists,
4 keyboard players and 2 drummers. Assuming each person applies
only once, in how many ways can Mark put the group together ?

05. A committee of 8 ladies and 3 gentlemen has to be formed from a group


of 12 ladies and 10 gentlemen. If one particular lady and a particular
gentleman refuse to serve in the same committee together, find the
number of different ways a committee can be formed.

06. A touring party of cricket players is made up of 5players from each of


India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and 3 from Bangladesh.
i) How many different selections of 11 players can be made for a
team?
ii) In one match, it is decided to have 3 players from each of
India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and 2 from Bangladesh. How
many different team selections can now be made ?

07. There are 10 seats in a row of chairs.
(i) Find the numbers of ways 8 people can sit so that two adjoining
chairs are vacant.
(ii) Find the number of ways 4 boys and 4 girls can be seated so that no
two girls are seated next to each other.
(iii)Show that the number of ways in which n number of men and n
number of women can be seated in a row such that no two females
are seated together, is n! (n + 1)!
08. (a) Ten different books are arranged on a book shelf, four of which
are green, four are blue and two are red. by showing all the
calculations clearly for each situation, find the different ways in
which the books can be arranged on the shelf.
(i) When the colour and the order in not considered
(ii) When the books of the same colour are placed together.
(b) A committee of four is to be selected from five boys and four
girls.The members are selected at random.
i) How many different selections are possible ?
ii) How many different selections are possible that the committee
will be made up of
a) all girls
b) more boys than girls ?

09. (a) There are 15 points on a plane. 6 of these points lie on the same
straight line. The line that goes across all these points does not go
across any of the other 9 points on the plane. Any three of these 9
points do not lie on the same straight line. Prove that
(i) number of different straight lines can be drawn by joining these 15
points.
(ii) number of triangles can be drawn with their respective vertices
on these 15 points.
(b) Find the number of permutations that can be made by selecting
four integers out of the eight integers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Out of
all the above permutations in how many permutations that,
1. Include integer 3?
2. Include 2, and 4? 3. Do not include 1, and 5 ?

10. A visiting cricket team of 15 players consists of 7 batsmen, 6 bowlers
and 2 wicket keepers. A team of 11 players has to be chosen from these
15 players for a one day match such that at least 5 batsmen, 4 bowlers
and 1 wicket keeper are included.
(i) If 1 batsman and 1 wicket keeper can not be included due to
injuries, find the number of different teams that can be formed.
(ii) How many different teams can be formed if all 15 players are fit
to play in the match?

11. A builder is planning to build 12 houses along one side of a road. He


will build 2 houses in style. A , 2 houses in style B, 3 houses in
style C, 4 houses in style D and 1 house in style E.

(i) Find the number of possible arrangements of these 12 houses.


(ii) Road

The 12 houses will be in two groups of 6 (see diagram) . Find the
` number of possible arrangements if all the houses in styles A and
D are in the first group and all the houses in styles B, C and E are in
the second group.
(iii) Four of the 12 houses will be selected for a survey. Exactly one
house must be in style B and exactly one house in style C. Find the
number of ways in which these four houses can be selected.

12. A staff car park at a school has 13 parking spaces in a row. There are 9
cars to be parked.

(i) How many different arrangements are there for parking the 9 cars
and leaving 4 empty spaces ?

(ii) How many different arrangements are there if the 4 empty spaces
are next to each other?

(iii) If the parking is random , find the probability that there will not be
4 empty spaces next to each other
