A PROJECT PROPOSAL SUMMITED TO:

THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE,

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND COMPUTER STUDIES
THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, ADO-EKITI

IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR

THE AWARD OF HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) IN
COMPUTER SCIENCE
CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Colleges and institutes are required to respond to the development of Information and

Communication Technology (ICT), especially after the Internet has became fast and everybody

have opportunity to benefit from this facility. Students become more familiar to use this useful

technology after the revolution of social media in last decade. Hence, the use of Electronic

learning (E-learning) term is more adequate and applicable to be used in universities and

institutes that provide great opportunities for learner and educator to acquire knowledge and

improve skills (Dutta et al., 2016).

Day by day, E-learning in higher education become more suitable and needed for teaching from

using email to forum discussion to distance learning. The definition of E-learning has different

meanings from different people perspectives. So, E-learning is a set of applications and

processes such as online learning, computer-based learning, distance learning. E-learning

contains the delivery of information by: Internet, Extranet, and Intranet (WAN/LAN), computer-

based, audio, video, satellite and TV. E-learning can be used by students for reviewing course

materials, forum discussion, lecturer assessment, exams date, publishing marks without reduction

of face-to-face class time. So, E-learning here is optional and just for helping students to improve

their skills and help them for better understanding. In contrary to this, E-learning can be defined

as delivering the whole course fully online without having any possibility of face-to-face class.

Also E-learning can be defined as mix between online and attending class by delivering part of

the course online which means partially online course (Boezerooij, 2012).
In recent years, the Internet became huge and widespread use in daily human life, which includes

the network of millions of connected computers identified by Internet address around the world.

So that, after this wide evolution of World Wide Web (WWW), the design and implementation

of E-learning become more useful and applicable to be implemented in: universities, institutes,

elementary and secondary schools, corporations, public and private sectors. E-learning can be

defined as a tool to share, discuss and exchange knowledge with overcoming to the barriers of

time and distance for learner and educator, give them opportunities to learn faster and

understanding better Manochehr (2014), Gunasekaran (2015)

E-learning is the reuse of information and can be presented in different forms such as: text,

sound, video, pictures and animation. E-learning information can be stored for long period of

time in various formats. This information is accessible by the students without regard of time and

place. So, it gives them more opportunities to review course contents more than one time in the

day. Hence, it helps learner to exploit and improve his own knowledge in very short period of

time as much as they want without stress of time and place discipline (Kwofie & Hentel, 2011).

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

After review of some schools, the problem encountered with their system is unable to do online

video lesson for student. As a solution to the problem above, the design and implementation of a

learning management system will enable a video lesson module for online physical interaction

between the staff and student.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to design and implementation of e-learning platform.

The objectives are to:

i. To identify the key features and functionalities required for an effective LMS.
ii. To design a user-friendly interface that will promote engagement and learning.

iii. To develop a scalable architecture that will accommodate a diverse range of users and

course materials.

iv. To test the LMS to ensure its functionality and usability.

v. To provide user training and support to ensure that the LMS is used effectively.

1.4 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Methodology is the function of selecting the objectives of the project and

establishing the policies, procedures and programs necessary for achieving them. It involves

planning, cost or budget development, project administration, leadership styles and conflict

management. It is very important because project planning can eliminate or reduce uncertainty,

improve efficiency of the operation, obtain a better understanding of the objectives etc. To carry

out the learning management system, three main methods or procedures hereby specified as

model formulation, workflow development, and model evaluation.

1.5 SCOPE AND LIMITATION

The scope of this study is within the area of the case study which is Federal Polytechnic Ado-

Ekiti. This study is limited to Designing and Implementing a Learning Management System.

1.6 SYSTEM ANALYSIS, IMPLEMENTATION AND DOCUMENTATION

This section discussed the results, software and hardware tools, system implementation and the

users’ guide. This allowed the process of having system personnel check out and put new

equipment into use, train users, install the new application and construct any files of data needed

to use it. The LMS required less overhead and very efficient.

SYSTEM ANALYSIS
System analysis is an important aspect of research. The requirements for developing Learning

Management System are analyzed and these requirements are very essential to implement the

system.

Hardware Requirement:

The following are the minimum requirements for the system to work:

i. Minimum 1gb of Random Access Memory(RAM)

ii. Minimum 250GB of Hard disk

iii. Minimum Intel Pentium Processor 1.5ghz

iv. A monitor, Keyboard, CPU / Laptop

v. A mouse

vi. Internet connection

Software requirements:

i. Working Operating System (Windows 7/8/8.1/10, MacOS, Ubuntu)

ii. A web browser (preferably chrome/firefox/operamini)

iii. Text Editor (Notepad ++, Sublime Text, Bracket)

iv. PHP Localhost Server e.g XAMPP, WAMP (If you want to run it locally)

1.7 EXPECTED CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE

The Learning Management System was fully implemented in HTML, CSS and BOOTSTRAP

using PHP and MySQL for standard web development. All the (Html, css, bootstrap and PHP)

files of the project are categorized respectively in a folder that can be distributed to any system

with its dependencies and can be hosted or uploaded on-line for real life implementation. Also a
PHP server (either online or offline) must be installed for the system to work on any system, so

as for the system to relate properly with the database server in fetching and storing the data.

The system implementation is sub divided into Admin Interface, Lecturer Interface and Student

Interface.
