Assignment -1, Summer 2023
Course Code: MATH 1151, Course Title: Fundamental Calculus
Submitted date : 13.06.2023 (in class)
Solve all questions
N.B. Don’t use the graphing calculator or online tool

1. Determine whether the equation defines 𝑦 as a function of 𝑥.

(a) 3𝑥 − 5𝑦 = 7 (c) 𝑥 2 + (𝑦 − 3)2 = 5
(b) (𝑦 + 3)3 + 1 = 2𝑥 (d) 2𝑥 − |𝑦| = 0
2. Determine whether the curve is the graph (Figure 1) of a function of 𝑥. If it is, sketch the domain
and range of the function along with the corresponding function.
Figure 1
3. Evaluate 𝑓(0), 𝑓(2), 𝑓(−2), 𝑓(3), 𝑓(√2), 𝑓(√3) and 𝑓(3𝑡) for the piece-wise defined function.
Then illustrate the graph along with the range of the function.
1
𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑥 ; 𝑥>3
2𝑥 ; 𝑥≤3
4. Sketch the following functions and also find their domain and range.
a) 𝑦 = −1 + √𝑥 − 1
𝑥
b) 𝑦 = |𝑥|
1
c) 𝑦 = 2−cos 𝑥
1 − 𝑥 ; −1 ≤ 𝑥 < 1
d) 𝑦 = { 0 ;1 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2
2
𝑥 − 4 ;𝑥 > 2
e) 2
𝑦 = √𝑥 − 2𝑥 + 5
f) 𝑦 = 2 − 3−𝑥
g) 𝑦 = 2 + 𝑒 2−𝑥
h) 𝑦 = −2 cos(2𝑥)
i) 𝑦 = −ln(3 − 𝑥)
𝑥
j) 𝑦 = 𝑥+1

5. Sketch graph of the following equations and using these graphs identify is it function or not ?
(a) 𝑥 = 𝑦 2 (d) y= (𝑥 + 1)2
(b) 3𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 2 = 12 (e) 𝑥 = |𝑦 + 1|
(c) 𝑦 = |𝑥 + 1| (f) y= 1 + 4𝑥 − 𝑥 2
6. The graph (Figure 2) of function 𝑓 and 𝑔 are given.
Figure 2
(a) State the values of 𝑓(−4) and 𝑔(3).
(b) Which is larger, 𝑓(−3) or 𝑔(3) ?
(c) For what values of x is 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑔(𝑥)?
(d) On what interval(s) is 𝑓(𝑥) ≤ 𝑔(𝑥)?
(e) State the solution of the equation 𝑓(𝑥) = −1.
(f) On what interval(s) is 𝑔 decreasing?
(g) State the domain and range of 𝑓.
(h) Sketch the domain and the range of the function 𝑔.
(i) On what interval(s) is 𝑓 increasing?
