Core i7 features

Prepared by: Ahmed Saad

Introduced to: Dr. Alsaddig

Intel Core i7 is a name that the company Intel uses for the computer processors it
makes for high-end desktop and laptop computers and tablets. Intel uses this name for
the fastest processors that they think will be used to build the most powerful consumer
devices. The 'Core' part of the name, which refers to the processor's core, has been
used by Intel since 2006, but the first Core i7 processor was released 3 years later in
2009.
There are different types of Core i7 processor. The name does not name a type.
Instead, it is the name for all of the fast processors that Intel thinks should be sold to
consumers. Intel uses two other "Core i-" names for its processors for consumers: "Core
i5" and "Core i3." The "Core i5" processors are mostly as fast as i7 processors, but lack
the Hyper Threading technology which allows each core to be used twice
simultaneously giving the impression of doubling the cores.
Intel uses a different name, Xeon, for processors that Intel makes for "server"
computers for businesses (and some rare laptops). Some of the "Core i7" processors
are almost the same as some of the "Xeon" processors, but each of the Xeon
processors is a little bit different than the "Core i7" processor, because a "server"
computer is not the same as a consumer computer. Intel also makes other "Xeon"
processors that are not the same as any "Core i7" processor. Unlike the Core i7, Xeon
processors support ECC (error corrected) memory, and multiple CPUs on the
same motherboard.
There are many models of i7s under different Generations, and the difference between
those are features, some i7s have specific features and some don’t. For example, Intel
Core i7 6700 does not have Unlocked Multiplier for overclocking, but Intel Core i7 6700k
have it. This makes 6700k superior.

The difference between i7s and i5s or i3s are the same; compromises on features. The
compromise may be on,

 Number of cores
 L3 Cache Size
 Frequency
 Number of Transistors
 Unlocked Multiplier
and many more.

In some cases, a few i7s are slower than a few i5s and a few i5s are slower than a few i3s.
This makes it difficult to choose a processor but you can always refer benchmarks for
short and simple answer.

First you should understand that intel has many kinds of processors in the same
generations and same family like U series for low TDP laptops or ultra-light laptops and
H series for high end gaming laptops. so performance depends upon series and its
generations.

Now your question is whether you should go for normal i7 (low tdp) or evo based then
remember that EVO is just a certification in which intel ensures that the particular laptop
is fulfilling the criteria. If the laptop is fulfilling the required criteria, then it will be
certified by EVO platform. i.e. the laptops should have minimum of 9 hours’ battery
backup, wake up from sleep less than 1 second and so on. so it’s just a marketing
strategic.

“Intel® Evo™ platform-based laptops deliver the remarkable responsiveness, battery life,
connectivity, audio, displays, and thin and light designs you need to move freely and
stay productive”, said by Intel.

So final verdict, if you are getting not much price difference and also you want
productivity in a slim factor then go for evo certified and if there is a lot of price
difference and also you want to buy a gaming laptop but okay but you are ok with
average battery life then go for i7 H editions.

Following are the features of Intel Core-i7.

• Code-named : Bloomfield (Nehalem)
• Fabrication: 45 nm
• Instruction set: x86, x86-64, MMX, SSE 4.2
• Socket: LGA 1366
• Bus: Quick path interconnect
• DDR3 RAM
• Chipset support: x58
• It offers best performance.
• cache: 4 x 256KB L2 and 8MB L3
• They support turbo boost and hyper threading.
• It does not have integrated graphics processor.
The table mentions comparison of core-i7 with its previous predecessors viz. core-i3
and core-i5.

Benefits or advantages of Intel Core-i7

Following are the benefits or advantages of Intel Core-i7:

➨It offers big cache size which is about 8 MB. This helps to increase instruction
execution speed.
➨Processor speed is very fast due to combination of turbo boost and hyper threading
technologies.
➨It consists of 4 pin connector to control the speed of fan. It provides cooler running
technology for less heat and less noise.
➨It can be run at overclocking speed. It is the process by which computer run at higher
clock rate than it is designed for.
