Flammable Materials in Enclosed Vehicle

This document discusses vehicle fires caused by flammable materials left inside enclosed vehicles parked in direct sunlight. It highlights that liquids, aerosol cans, or lithium batteries can cause fires when the inside temperature exceeds their flashpoint. Recommendations include parking in the shade, removing unnecessary flammables, and using vehicle compartments or removing power banks and lithium batteries when parked outdoors.

Flammable Materials in Enclosed Vehicle

Highlights
This alert has been published in response to many cases of vehicles being burned in the region during
summer months.
As investigated by the NAISOD, flammable liquids, aerosol cans or lithium batteries kept in an enclosed
vehicle are one of immediate causes of vehicle fires when parked for long time under direct sunlight.

What went wrong

The temperature inside enclosed vehicle parked
for prolonged period of time in direct sunlight can
easily exceed a flashpoint of many liquid
substances. Also bottles and cans containing gas
and fuel can fail due to thermal expansion. Self
ignition of flammable liquids kept inside the cabin,
such as fuel, perfumes, hand sanitizers and
lighters would cause a fire which can easily
consume the entire vehicle. Also leaving mobile
phones, power banks and lithium batteries inside
enclosed vehicle may cause battery failure and
self-ignition, which is very difficult to extinguish.

Recommendations

If practicable:
• Park your vehicle in the garage, under shade
or in the underground parking.
• Remove all unnecessary flammable liquids and
combustible materials kept inside the vehicle.
• Utilize vehicle compartments, such as glove
box, arm rest (cooled) box or fully enclosed
containers to store personal flammable items if
needed in the vehicle
• Do not leave power banks or equipment
operated by lithium batteries inside a vehicle if
parked outdoor.
