PHYSICS Paper - 1

Marks: 80 Time: 1.5hr

Answer to this paper must be written on the paper provided separately.


You will not be allowed to write during first 15 minutes.
This time is to be spent in reading the question paper.
The time given at the head is allowed for writing the answers.
Section I is compulsory, attempt any four questions from section II.
The intended marks for the question or parts of question are given in the bracket [ ].

SECTION I (40 marks )

Question-1
a) Why is white light considered polychromatic in nature? [2]
b) Copy and complete the table below: [2]

c) Calculate the frequency of a yellow light of wave length 5500 .The speed of light is 3x108m/s. [2]
d) Draw a ray diagram to illustrate the determination of focal length of a convex lens using an auxiliary

e) Give the range of wavelength of electromagnetic waves that are visible to us [2]

Question-2
a) A body of mass 1.5kg is dropped from the 2nd floor of a building which is at a height of 12m. What is the
force acting on it during its fall? (g = 9.8ms -2) [2]
b) Define one kilowatt hour. How is it related to the joule? [2]
c) From the ground floor, a man comes up to the fourth floor of a building using the staircase. Another
person comes up to the same floor using an elevator. Neglecting friction, compare the work done in the
two cases. [2]
d) What is the SI unit of energy? How is electron Volt (eV) related to it? [2]
e) The handle of a hand flour grinder is near its rim. Explain the reason for this. [2]

Question-3
a) The critical angle for glass-air interface is 42° for yellow light. Will it be equal to, less than or greater
than 420 for (i) Red light (ii) Blue light? [2]
b) Arrange the following electromagnetic spectrum in the increasing order of frequency.
Visible light, X-rays, Infrared radiations, Ultraviolet rays [2]
c) A particular type of high energy electromagnetic rays help us to study the structure of crystals. Name
these rays and give one more important use of these rays. [2]
d) An electromagnetic wave has frequency of 20MHz. What is its wavelength? Name this wave. [2]
e) Why are infra-red radiations preferred over ordinary visible light for taking photographs in fog?[2]

Question-4
a) A body of mass 30 kg has the momentum 1500 kg ms -1. Calculate the kinetic energy and velocity of the
body. [2]
b) Name the gravitational unit of force in S.I. How is this unit related to absolute unit of force in SI
system? [2]
c) Where is the centre of gravity of the following objects situated?
(i) Rhombus (ii) Scalene triangle (iii) Cylinder (iv) Sphere [2]
d) A block of mass 30 kg is pulled along a slope as shown in the diagram with a constant speed by applying
a force of 200 N, parallel to the slope. A and B are the initial and final positions of the body.

(i) Calculate the work done by the force in moving the block from A to B.
(ii) Calculate the potential energy gained by the block. (g = 10 ms -1) [2]
e) Classify the following into contact and non-contact forces:
1. Tension 2. Friction 3. Gravitational force 4. Magnetic force [2]

SECTION II (40 Marks)


Attempt any four questions from this Section

Question-5
a) A stick partly immersed in water appears to be bent. Draw a ray diagram to show the bending
of the-stick when placed in water and viewed obliquely from above. [3]
b) ‘O’ is a monochromatic source of light placed in front of a glass slab PQRS. The diagram below shows
two rays of light starting from point ‘O’ and passing through the glass slab. Answer the following
questions:

(i) Does the point ‘O’ appears farther or nearer with respect to surface PS?
(ii) How does the shift in the position of ‘O’ depend upon the thickness PQ of the glass slab?
(iii) Justify your answer in Part (ii) by drawing an appropriate diagram. [3]
c)

(i) Trace the path of reflected and refracted rays in the above diagram. (A rectangular glass block which is
silvered at the bottom).
(ii) How many images are formed in the above case?
(iii) Which image is brightest? [4]
Question-6
a) A body of mass ‘m‘ is moving with a velocity ‘v’, derive the expression for the Kinetic Energy possessed
by it. What is Work-Energy Theorem? [3]
b) Determine the Centre of Gravity of an irregular lamina by the method of balance using a plumb line.
(Write in at least 4 steps) [4]
c) Differentiate between centripetal and centrifugal force. In an atom why do electrons not fall into the
nucleus due to force of attraction between the electrons and the nucleus? [3]

a) The diagram shows the object ‘O’ and the image ‘I’ formed by a lens. Copy and complete the ray
diagram and on it:

(i) Mark the position of the lens LL1.


(ii) Mark the position of focus F
(iii) Name the lens. [3]
b) (i) Complete the diagram by completing the path of the rays incident normally on the
faces of the right angled prism. Assume i = 420 for the material of the prism.

(ii) What is the total angle of deviation in the above case? [3]
c) (i) Explain briefly what causes the twinkling of stars at night.
(ii) Express the refractive index of a medium
(a) In terms of velocity of light.
(b) In terms of angle of incidence i in air and the angle of refraction r in the denser medium.
(c)If a ray of light passes from medium I to medium II without any change in direction what can be said
about the refractive indices of these media? (angle i is not zero). [4]

Question-8
a) A boy of mass 50 kg runs upstairs measuring 20 cm each. If the number of stairs is 50 and he reaches
the top floor in 40 s. Calculate:
(i) Force of gravity acting on the body.
(ii) Work done by him against the gravity.
(iii) Power developed by the boy. [3]
b) A bullet of mass 25gm is travelling with a speed of 300m/s. It enters a wooden block of
10 cm thickness and comes out with a speed of 100m/s. Find work done by the force of friction
offered by the block. [3]
c) (i) Two bodies A and B are such that weight of A is greater than weight of B, have equal momentum.
Which one has more kinetic energy? Explain.
(ii) A ball of mass 60g is thrown vertically upwards with an initial velocity of 30 m/s. Calculate
the maximum height reached if 40% of the initial energy is lost against friction offered by.
Take g = 10 ms-2. [4]

Question-9
(a) The diagram below shows a glass block suspended in a liquid. A beam of light of single colour is
incident from liquid on one side of the block.
Draw diagram to show how light bends when it travels from liquid to glass and then to liquid if:
(i) Glass is optically denser than the liquid.
(ii) Liquid is optically denser than the glass.
(iii) Both glass and liquid have same refractive index. [3]
(b) (i) How does the value of angle of deviation produced by a prism change with an increase in the:
(1) Value of angle of incidence.
(2) Angle of the prism.
(ii) Calculate the velocity of light in glass, if the velocity of light in air is 3 x 10 8 m/s and refractive index
of glass is 1.5. [4]
(c) (i) Name the portion of spectrum which has certain radiations which produce a heating effect but are
not visible.
(ii) Write a use of the above mentioned spectrum in our daily life. [2]

Question-10
(a) Give reason for the following:
(i) It is easier to open a door by applying the force at the free end of it.
(ii) A rain drop reaches the earth with a constant velocity.
(iii) Ultraviolet bulbs have quartz envelop instead of glass. [3]
(b) Take a small piece of stone, tie it at one end of a thread and move it in a horizontal circular path by
holding the other end of the thread such that the particle moves equal distance in equal interval of time
in the circular path.
(i) Name the motion experienced by the piece of stone.
(ii) If the thread is broken, then in which direction corresponding to the circular path will the stone
move?
(iii) What is the name of the force acting along the thread towards the centre of the circular path
responsible for circular motion of the stone? [3]
(c)

A force of 12 N is acting at a corner B of a rectangular lamina of length 8 cm and breadth 6 cm in the


direction shown in the diagram. Calculate the moment of the force about:
(i) The point of intersection of the two diagonals.
(ii) Point D. [3]
