Q1 W1 D2 Factoring Polynomials by Grouping

The document is a daily lesson log for a Math 8 class that covers factoring polynomials. It includes the objectives, content standards, and procedures for the lesson. The lesson involves reviewing previous concepts, presenting examples of factoring polynomials by groupings, and having students practice this method. Students will be grouped and given sets of polynomials to factor by identifying common factors within the first two terms and last two terms of each expression. The teacher will then discuss how to factor by groupings and have students report their work.

 Let the students report their outputs.

 Process with questions.

Abstraction:
The teacher will discuss what is factoring by groupings:

Factoring by grouping is not distributing or unwrapping

polynomials.
The simplest situation in which we can factor by grouping is when we
have a four-term polynomial whose first two terms have their own
common factor, and whose last two terms have their own common
factor.

E. Discussing the
new concepts and Factoring trinomials ax2 + bx + c by grouping.
practicing new skills
#2
 A polynomial with three terms is called a trinomial.
 Trinomials often (but not always!) have the form x2 + bx + c.
 At first glance, it may seem difficult to factor
trinomials and polynomials with even more terms, but a
technique called grouping has the answer.

Factoring trinomials ax2 + bx + c by grouping is also called ac-product

method.

The teacher will discuss the steps on this type of method.

Factor: 3x2 + 11x + 10

Steps
1. Find a and c in ax2 + bx + c 3x2 + 11x + 10
a = 3 c = 10 ac = 30
2. List all the factors of ac. (1) (30), (2) (15), (3) (10), (5) (6)

Then find the factors that add 5 and 6 add to 11.

up to bx.

Write ax2 + bx + c as a four 3x2 + (5x+6x) + 10

term by replacing bx with the
two factors 5x and 6x.

Remove the parenthesis 3x2 + 5x+6x + 10

3. Find the GCF and factor the x (3x + 5) + 6x + 10

first two terms
4. Find the GCF and factor the x (3x + 5) + 2(3x + 5)
last two terms.

Factor out (3x + 5) from the (3x+5) (x+2)

two expression
5. Multiply the binomial factors 3x2 + 11x + 10 = (3x+5) (x+2)
to check the results

3x2 + 11x + 10 = (3x+5) (x+2)

Factor: 6x2 + 11x + 3

Steps
1. Find a and c in ax2 + bx + 6x2 + 11x + 3
c a = 6 c = 3 ac = 18
2. List all the factors of ac. (1) (18), (2) (9), (3) (6)

Then find the factors that add 2 and 9 add to 11.

up to bx.
Write ax2 + bx + c as a four 6x2 + (9x+2x) + 3
term by replacing bx with the
two factors 9x and 2x.

Remove the parenthesis 6x2 + 9x+2x + 3

3. Find the GCF and factor the 3x (2x + 3) + 2x + 3

first two terms
4. Find the GCF and factor the 3x (2x + 3) + (2x + 3)
last two terms.

Factor out (2x + 3) from the

two expression (2x+3) (3x+1)
5. Multiply the binomial factors 6x2 + 11x + 3 = (2x+3) (3x+1)
to check the results

6x2 + 11x + 3 = (2x+3) (3x+1)

The teacher will discuss the general rules on factoring by

grouping.
Rules in Factoring by groupings:
1. Group terms that have a common monomial factor. There
will be usually two groups. Sometimes the terms must be
rearranged.
2. Factor out the common monomial factor each group.
3. Factor out the remaining binomial factor (if there exist)

F. Developing The teacher will ask to learners to go to their groups. Each group
