Adorno and Horkheimer developed the theory of cultural industry to describe how popular culture functions under capitalism. They argued that the culture industry disseminates standardized knowledge through media to produce standardized people. They believed popular culture is created not for artistic merit but for profit, suppressing imagination. The culture industry psychologically controls people to find relaxation through consumption rather than creative expression. Culture and arts can benefit society through economic growth, health, social inclusion, and education.

ATTITUDES IN CULTURE

Cultural Industry has another function in the capitalist economy—Psychological Control.

from work relaxation

Labor is essential for being human, that is creating and having agency over your own destiny, but since labour is owned by
someone else you have to act your freedom in your leisure time alone.

Capitalism says, you are free to consume as you wish – but not to create as you wish, because that requires the privilege
of ownership. The cultural industry does its best to take that freedom away from you.
